Is microdermabrasion really bad for you?

I read and article in a British tabloid that having too much microderm can be bad for you and cause damage to your face? Is that true and if not, once a month can't really be bad, can it?

Re: Is microdermabrasion really bad for you?

  • My dermatologist doesn't recommend it.
  • Are we talking like clinical microdermabrasion where an aesthetican does it, or like at-home microderm kits?

  • Well, too much exfoliation of any type is bad for you.  My derm has no issue with microdermabrasion done no more often than once a month by a professional.  My best friend tried an at home kit just once and really hurt her face - and she's had them professionally with no problems.  She's on Retin-A, so that probably contributed to it.
  • I've wanted to get a professional one but never did it because they warn you to avoid sun exposure for a week or so afterwards.  So I never got around to it.  I've seen results on other people and it looks amazing.  It's a safe option for women ttc'ing and pregnant.
  • Yes, I was thinking about the ones you get at the Dr's office. But maybe it's ok if you only get them once a month, or at least I want to think so:)
