Tonight I decided to go through my closet and get rid of anything I haven't worn in two years, anything that just doesn't fit right, and/or anything that just looks dated. Some things I can easily toss in the "Donate" pile. (I generally donate to Goodwill, or occasionally a women's shelter if it's business attire, since they can always use that stuff.)
I'd like to get some money for some of my clothes, but even though most of my stuff is in great condition, most consignment stores here won't take anything that's not relatively new (less than a year old).
Also, here's what I struggle with most: Some of my really wacky old tops or skirts make me kind of nostalgic, and if I ever have a little girl, I wonder if she'd like to play dress up in some of these things. So I'm trying to decide if instead of donating them, I should just hang on to them so my future potential daughter can play with/laugh at them.
What do you guys do with your old clothes?
Re: What do you do with old clothes?
Yea, I just donate them. You could sell them on eBay if you really want to try and get money for them, but I'm way too lazy for that.
I donate. Usually to goodwill, but if I have work clothes in good condition I donate to a local women's shelter, like you said. I donated old bridesmaid dresses to an org. that donates prom dresses to those in need. You can get a receipt and use the tax write-off. I think it is hard to get money for used clothes, unless they are high-fashion brands and in great condition.
My family has a yearly rummage sale. If I have time I price the stuff I want gone and whatever doesn't sell I send to Goodwill.
I have a bunch of old T's that I'm super attached to for various reasons, so they hang out in one of my drawers because I refuse to part with them.
Donate.
I tried Plato's Closet once to see if I could get some money for them and it was a total waste of time. They picked like 3 things and gave me $10.
I'll definitely save some of my clothes for Audrey, though. I always wished my mom had done that! She had some cute dresses that I totally would have worn!

I generally donate my stuff. I do have a few things that I've kept for El to play dress up in (specifically - my wedding dress, I want to do this: http://pinterest.com/pin/157907530654271213/
I also let her dress up in stuff I wear now, though. She loves to play with my clothes and shoes and I don't really have anything that I would be really upset about if she ruined it.
I usually just donate. I've tried to consign, but like others, find the process frustrating. However, my Mom has a decent consignment store in her area, so I occasionally give her stuff to bring there. She deals with all the logistics, and I usually end up with some cash out of the deal.
I never thought of keeping fun dress-up clothes for a daughter...my SIL's actually have a lot of vintage stuff, so maybe she can just play with those
You should totally make a Tshirt quilt! H has one that his sisters made for them, I think they each have one. Makes me wish I had held onto some of my nostalgic Tshirts: http://www.craftstylish.com/item/7394/how-to-make-a-t-shirt-quilt/page/all
That is SUCH a cute idea! Now I need to have a daughter, I don't think Kyler would be too thrilled if I put my wedding dress on him.
Agreed! They're not terribly hard unless you have tissue/ burnout weight tees (which is why my college one has taken forever- I had to wait til I actually knew what to do with that kind of fabric).
Stand up for something you believe in.

First, I let my SIL look through what I'm getting rid of and then the rest gets donated.
I have held on to all of my high school dance dresses and bm dresses in the event that I have a daughter one day who might want to dress up in them. My mom did this and I used to play in her dresses all the time; I even wore the dress she wore to her senior prom that she went to with my dad to a girl scout pink tea. I have the two pictures in a double frame and love it.
I also have t-shirts that I've held onto because I love them and I already have a t-shirt quilt that my mom made me when I started college...I don't care I love them and they're staying in the drawer.
