PCE lesson plan help needed: Trayvon article

I am starting Othello later this week, which Otherizes the main character and portrays him as savage, animalistic, and lusty: some gross stereotype of the 16th century African. I use a pic of Lebron and Gisele on a magazine cover which was criticized for re-enacting this stereotype and then an article on Tiger Woods that basically says "so what if Tiger likes white women?" that challenges the stereotype of black man as covetimg white women.

So I am looking for another text I could use, dealing with Trayvon, that really explores the lingering stereotypes about black males as dangerous that made Trayvon seem so suspicious in Zimmerman's eyes. It could be an opinion piece or informational. Something that shows how the idea of black man as dangerous or Other is still with us, as exemplified by the Trayvon case.

Anyone recall reading anything like this from the flood of recent discussions?

  • I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but Tim Wise wrote a great piece that touches on some of those issues:

    http://www.timwise.org/2012/03/trayvon-martin-white-denial-and-the-unacceptable-burden-of-blackness-in-america/

    It's long, but worth it.

  • If you're looking for a visual example of this idea, especially in the media,  to go with written pieces, I believe it was Newsweek that photoshopped OJ's mugshot to look darker on their cover, with the alleged intent of making him look more menacing. But you may be looking for more recent. ETA: nevermind, read your post too fast. You're looking specifically for Trayvon stuff, it seems.
