Now I have a dumb question

I hope someone will know the answer. I am in our hometown living with family where they don't deal with a lot of military. The hospital wants me to pay for fingerprinting and an FBI background check because I haven't lived in the state for 2 years. My legal residence hasnt changed from this state since I was born so, in my mind I shouldn't have to do this (well, FIL told me I shouldn't have to but I want a second opinion). What do the MN's say? Should I just suck it up and fork over the $50 for fingerprints and additional $30-ish for the background check?

Re: Now I have a dumb question

  • I guess it depends if their requirement is because you haven't physically *lived* there, which you haven't vs. if you have continued to be a resident.

If I were in that situation, I'd probably just do it because I'd want the job. Maybe I would ask them to clarify, but at the end of the day if it means I would/wouldn't have a job, I would pay the money.

Yes, you need to do it.  Military families can retain residency without having to physically live in a state, but the hospital needs to know about your criminal background. How would you like it if the requirement was waived for someone who really shouldn't be hired due to criminal behavior in another state, and they proceeded to commit the same crimes on patients or staff at the hospital?

    Yes

  • Agreed. With all of the paperwork, hassles, and headaches we as military families have to endure I would also just pay it to get the job. Maybe it is just me but 80 bucks seems like nothing just to not have to hassle with it. Good luck!
  • I understand the whole issue with the difference between a job or not. I'm just sick of shelling out extra money for what seems like tedious stuff, especially since I just paid over $500 in to state taxes. It just all seems to be adding up and it's killing our savings. I'm also per diem so I'll be lucky if I get part time hours. Paying all of this for what's going to be little return sucks

  • I don't think there is a way you could get out of doing the fingerprinting. I had to do it for the background check for my last job because I had not physically resided in the state for the last 5 years.

I would, however, ask if there are other places you can get the fingerprinting done. My employer recommended I go to our city office to have it done, and they would have charged me $40. It seemed like a lot for something that takes less than five minutes, so I called around. The office of a neighboring county usually only serves residents of that county, but they said since I was a mil dependent, they could help me and they only charged $5. For me, the 10 minutes of google searching and calling and a 10 drive was worth the savings. I'm not sure if this is a possibility in your area, but it's worth a shot.

  • Stupid nest double posted me. I think I'm going to call around and see if there are any other places that will do it for less.

hmmnm... Every single job I've had since HS has required a Background Check and Fingerprinting, but I have never been required to pay that myself. It was the responsiblity of my prospective employer to pay the bill.

I am confused as to why are they making you pay for it....

    I want the COOOOOKIE!
