NPR just referred to the Handmaid's Tale as Sci-Fi

in a teaser for a segment later this afternoon....

pretty scary when sci-fi becomes reality.

Re: NPR just referred to the Handmaid's Tale as Sci-Fi

  • I think it's generally considered "speculative fiction", which, technically, is a branch of Sci-Fi.

I'd put The Hunger Games there, too, FWIW.

...they're both "alternate universe" theories, or theories of what will happen 10, 20, 200 years from now, hence "Sci-Fi"

The Girl is 5. The Boy is 2. The Dog is 1.

not all science fiction is about outer space and dinosaurs.

And not all fantasy is about wizards and dragons.

  • In fact, some sci-fi is about wizard dinosaurs who ride dragons in outer space!

The best stuff is about wizards riding dragons while fighting dinosaurs that build nuclear weapons in space. Wink

ETA: clearly laptop and I are on the same wavelength today. lol

  • It's soft sci-fi, which most dystopian/alternate future or past stories fall into the category of.

Also how the ever loving hell is that story even close to being a reality?

I'll just say that I was taken aback that the definitions of sci-fi and fantasy fiction seem to be a touchy subject, lol.

To be fair, I don't think she meant right now. She just means next week should Mittens be elected.

  • I hate you all for making me read that book. It scared the absolute be-ge-ges out of me. I totally should have stood up to the peer pressure.

On any given day, I would say most major newspapers do a pretty good job of spelling it out for you.

Yeah I guess I totally am missing all those articles where all women in the US have absolutely zero rights and the women who can reproduce better do so pretty quickly post creepy fetishized sex acts or else risk being killed (my bad, discarded) as an "unwoman". Also you know, all about how fashion and cosmetics, anything remotely seen as being a "feminine" thing, and even friendships between women are illegal now days, must have missed that in the papers too. Or when the US turned into a militant theocracy.

  • Well, I'm all for transvaginal wanding. After all, I read Children of Men and now I'm worried if we keep letting women abort babies, there will eventually be no more babies.

It's a slippery slope, guys. A slippery slope.

I thought that movie was about unexplained infertility.

Unexplained or abortions, hmmmmmm. You can't trust the liberal media on this.

  • Hey you know what fictional movies/books are also reality?

That would be none of them, because they're fiction.

I want to take this opportunity to say that even though we're going to disagree in the future (based on your own description of your politics, and, of course, the angle and composition of the slope I'm currently on), I like you.  I really, really like you.

You just earned +10,000 awesome points. I have to explain this to people ALL THE TIME and am sooo pleased whenever people know this/explain it to others.
