So we move in April 27th, and we were thinking of having our housewarming party on May 13th (a Sunday). We were thinking of having an open-house type thing, from noon to five, and just letting people come when they can.
Because of the length of time that people will be coming and going, I want to do something simple with the food - I was thinking a Mexican theme with chips and salsa, beer, but that sounds too basic to me. Any ideas on foods you can keep out safely for longer periods of time, that go with this theme?

Re: Housewarming party
Are you planning on doing any painting or anything and are you the type of person who can't let anyone see their home when things are in disarray? I ask because we closed 11 days ago, and I completely underestimated the amount of time everything would take.
H and I both work full time and I'm a total type-A Martha Stewart wannabe, so the fact that nothing is in its correct place is driving me batty. Not sure if this is a concern for you, but if it is, you might want to give yourselves an extra week or two to get settled.
As far as food goes, you might want to have heavier food towards the beginning since those people probably wouldn't have had lunch. Other things you could add: fruit salad, sangria, veggies with dip/hummus. I would have two or three containers of dip so that you can switch them out every couple of hours.
I would try to push the party back a week to the 20th both to give you more time to get settled in plus to avoid any conflicts with Mothers' Day. I think chips and salsa are good, maybe some queso dip in a mini crockpot so it doesn't get cold. Bean dip? I'm struggling to think of Mexican foods that can sit out for awhile because most things I can think of -- tacos, enchiladas, tamales, etc. -- have meat and wouldn't taste very good cold. Here's an article from Reader's Digest that might help: http://www.rd.com/slideshows/10-perfect-mexican-appetizer-recipes/
Ooooh Mother's Day!!!! Duh!! And I'm a mother, how bad is that that I didn't remember?! LOL.
These are great ideas - the crockpot queso dip, awesome!

Soda and sparkling cider is fine. It's the middle of the day and an informal get together. I wouldn't expect alcohol at all as a guest.
But again- depends on your friends and family.

Ditto, but we're light drinkers and so are (most) of our family members. I wouldn't expect alcohol at a day-time informal gathering.
I agree. Totally depends on the group. When we have our house warming we will probably fill a cooler with beer because H's friends will want one if they are going to be sitting around and visiting. H's coworkers are also big drinkers so they would probably won't one or two as well. Otherwise, soda or a punch is totally fine!

Our family is full of light drinkers too. I think they'd be happy if there was alcohol but I don't think they'd think it was absolutely necessary. I think I'll just stick with sparkling cider and other non-alcoholic drinks.
Thanks for the input guys!
I usually do chips, guacamole, salsa, hummus, pita chips, and a variety of cheeses with crackers for non meal-times.
To keep with the mexican theme, you can do empanadas, mini quesadillas, mini tamales (I ordered some of these once and they were a hit), a mexican salad in little cups, so they are individual sizes. Get some cervezas and make pitchers of margaritas! (I just use limes, lemons, sometimes oranges, coitreau and tequila.)
