AI's NOT in Mexico? Perhaps Europe?

DH and I want to go to an AI for our 10 year anniversary next year.  We'd really like to go somewhere where we feel like the only people on earth, but we are limited by our budget of 5k.  We also only have a week of vacation time, so we don't want to go around the world.  Europe or the Caribbean would be great.

Any suggestions?  I've searched through pages of threads, but it seems most AI threads are heavy on suggestions for Mexico, and we aren't interested in Mexico.

  • Dominican Republic, Costa Rica? But honestly, I would think the DR looks pretty much just like Mexico as far as beaches. Costa Rica's probably a little different with the mountains and jungle.
  • None in Europe as far as I know but there are alot in the Caribbean - Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Belize, Costa Rica, Aruba, St. Lucia, Roatan, and so on...

  • i believe there are occidentals in spain-but that's it.
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

With the cost of flights to Europe, you may be hard pressed to afford the "feeling like the only people on earth feeling" for 5K but it's worth a look.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • I would look at Jamaica or Dominican Republic.  We've been to both and had a great time at both places.  I'd also look into St. Lucia - we were supposed to go there for our Honeymoon and had to change due to a hurricane.

  • I've been to a AIs in Turkey and Panama. Didnt feel like the only person on earth, but in Turkey my group was the only one with Americans. I don't think I could feel like the only person on earth in any staffed-resort though.

  • With so much to see in Europe, I wouldn't want to feel confined to staying at an AI to get my money's worth.
  • Oh, I've also been to an AI in The Gambia. It was full of drunken British middle aged women who were engaged in transactional sex with 19 year old local men. Gross.

  • If you're not set on an AI, I HIGHLY recommend The Rockhouse in Negril, Jamaica.  We were just there in Feb and it was ah-mazing!!!  We've done the AI thing in Mexico and Jamaica(Couples) and much prefer staying at a nice boutique hotel and paying for exactly what we eat, drink, do, etc rather than being another cow in the herd at an AI.

LOL!  I'll be sure to avoid this one.

It sounds like the Caribbean is probably our best bet.  THanks for the suggestions - keep 'em coming!

  • I haven't done any AIs, but if you want the "only people on earth feeling" on a budget, I highly recommend Vieques (Puerto Rico). We flew into San Juan and took the ferry over to Vieques, stayed in a lovely hotel there, rented a car, and drove to a different beach every day. Most days, we were the only people on the beach. The hotel where we stayed (I think it was called El Tamarindo) packed a lunch for us to take to the beach every day.

  • Check out Peter island in the BVIs. It is wonderful! Pretty quiet place with great food, beautiful pool and beaches. The resort is the only thing on the island--you fly into Tortola and then they pick you up in a boat and bring you over to Peter island.

    The spa is amazing!

You can sign up to be dropped off at a beach where you are the only ones there for 2 hours.

Also, you can go on some great snorkeling trips-we did one to the Virgin Gorda baths.

  • I have 2 suggestions but neither is an AI. We went to Vieques for our honeymoon and literally were the only people on the beach every day. We skinny dipped even! There is great snorkeling there. We stayed at Hacienda Tamarindo. There are few tiny shops and restaurants there and it is very sparsely populated.

It is more primitive but we stayed at a Red Sea beach camp in Nuweiba. We stayed at Sawa camp. It is very simple, grass huts right on the beach with mattresses and mosquito netting and a hammock. Very chill laid back atmosphere with good food and accommodating staff. The one caveat is that it is a camp style bathroom but it was impeccably, spotlessly, weare bare feet clean when we were there just a year and a half ago. I was 21 weeks pregnant and very comfortable. Most travelers are German.
