Knowing when to rest or work through pain

Since I'm new to working out I'm having trouble knowing when to push (or not) through pain. Previously I would have just not worked out if I had any inkling of pain -- any excuse to avoid exercise I would have jumped on. But now I want to work out and feel blah when I haven't and so I don't really know how to decide.

My current conundrum is that my right ankle is hurting. And, in fact, is kind of swollen. I have no clue what I did to it -- felt a twinge yesterday when I was walking in flip-flops and it just never went away. I walked the dogs last night (30-min walk) and it hurt, but I was fine at the end. So today I'm faced with my planned exercise -- C25K Week 5/Day 1 and strength (abs/legs) -- and I don't know what I should do.

Re: Knowing when to rest or work through pain

  • With swelling + pain, don't push it.  Rest it, ice it, elevate it.

You don't have to totally skip working out, though.  You can still do abs, swim, upper body exercises, ride a bike if that's pain-free, etc.

  • Yep--RICE...rest, ice, compression, elevation. Don't run or workout on it until it feels better. If it doesn't get better in a few days or gets worse at any time, go see your doctor.

You should never push through PAIN. Pain is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong.
