Someone had asked me about this race last week and I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to do my first race report.
I challenged DH to run this race and he said he would only do it if I stuck with him and ran at his pace, which is a lot slower than my usual pace.
I had had a pretty busy weekend since my sister was in town with her new boyfriend. So when we left for the race site around 6AM. I was not as prepared as I should have been. I knew the general vicinity of where the buses would be and had a tiny little map. I thought there would be signs leading us in the general direction. But I followed the cars and finally we just found a parking garage and parked. We started heading out, but quickly realized we were going the wrong way. A half a mile walk later we found where the buses were.
We were in the bus line for like 20 minutes and got on. The weather that morning was not very pretty. Light drizzle, windy, upper 40s. I was just hoping it didn't start pouring mid-race. I was wearing a tank top, capris and light running jacket that I had picked up from Marshalls. We pulled out around 6:50. They had said that the last bus would leave at 7AM. But I doubt they did this. There were still a ton of people in line when we left. The bus ride was pretty slow and nerve wracking. As soon we got there, DH and I hiked over to the porty potty line. After that, we had some water and a bagel at the food tent.
Finally, it was time to line up. We lined up in the 10-10:59 pace area. And off we went. The first half mile or so was downhill, which was really nice. It was during the first mile that I realized what a competitive biotch I am. Our pace was 11:30. It was really hard running that slow and I was aching to go faster. DH was still warming up. Luckily, it got better each mile and we settled in to a 10:15-10:30 pace for most of the race. There were some winding hills, but they were pretty easy for the most part. There was a steeper hill around mile 9, but compared to what we're used to training on in our neighborhood. It was a breeze. I fueled with a Chocolate Outrage GU around 45 min. It was the first time I had had this one. It was delicious!
The course overall was really beautiful. Everything was green, there were lots of lovely houses to look at. The Potomac was pretty in the rain. The spectators were sparse for the most part. There were a few parts where people cheered us on, especially at the end. The heavier rain held off for the most part and the light drizzle was actually a little refreshing.
I was really pushing DH to run at the end. It was a little frustrating, but I figured if I wasn't going to PR, we should cross the finish line together, which we did. We finished around 1:45 at a 10:29 pace.
Did anyone else run this? How did you do?

Re: GW Parkway Classic 10 miler - Race Report
Great job sticking with your husband! The last two times I did GW I did it with my slower paced husband so I can understand what you were feeling! When we finish though and I helped him to a personal best it's all worth it!
We decided not to run it this year, but I did run down the trail for my long run and saw everyone. It made me a little sad..and I would have cheered if not fo the fear of dying doing so!
pacers talks a big game, but there were buses rolling up to Mt Vernon at like 7:45, so there's no way the last bus left at 7AM. I highly recommend the PC parking to anyone who does this race (if it's convenient). I parked at 6:15 and was on a bus by like 6:20. No lines, no waiting outside.
I ran the race. it was not pretty. it was character building. I'm out of shape and I've been sick and did not wake up feeling very well that morning. by the 5K mark I knew it was not going to end well.
my current 10M PR is on that course and I was so much slower yesterday. entirely expected given my general state of fitness and health. but I'm still way disappointed since I probably won't be running anything longer than a 10K until next spring.
but I do like the event and I'll be back next year!

Running on the Rhode
I hate you very much
I actually loved the cold and rain yesterday. I really wanted to do the 10 miler but have had some issues with my back and feet so I just did the 5k.
I like that they have parking at Eisenhower now. My one complaint was that they didn't have nearly enough bathrooms. I was in line for 30 min. and had to get out of line after last call for bag check. Then, I waited another 20 min. I barely made the start of the race.I don't remember it being that way at all last year.
