Favorite places east of the Mississippi
I'll be in the US (Ohio and DC) for a bit this summer and am looking to explore beyond the cities while I'm there. I've realized lately that there are foreign countries I know a lot better than the areas where I've lived in the US and am looking to remedy that.
So far I'm thinking of visiting Mammoth Cave (how is it possible that I grew up within a few hours of it without realizing its a national park?) and possibly Shenandoah.
Does anyone have any ideas of interesting areas to visit within a 4 or 5 hour drive from DC or SW Ohio?

I've heard Midlothian, VA is quite lovely in the summer. We have like 5 targets and a Cheeburger Cheeburger
Seriously though - you're really into wine - I think you should do a Virginia Wine tour. Charlottesville is absolutely beautiful and there are a million vineyards in the area. It would fit into your Shennandoah trip too.
For our fifth wedding anniversary, DH and I rented a cabin in the Monangahela National Forest in West Virginia and spent the week hiking around there and cooking and resting in the cabin. It was really beautiful and relaxing. Here's a link for info on the forest:

Also, I haven't been there yet, but I've heard that Assateague Island in VA/MD is really beautiful, especially the wild horses. It's on our to-visit list when we get back to the U.S.

VA wine country is great. Either Charlottesville or Lexington would be a good base - lots of hiking, wineries, good food, some history. The Shenandoah really is beautiful. You'd have your pick of cabin rentals and b&bs, and there are also some resort-type places around Charlottesville.
Deep Creek Lake, MD is lovely. It's in the mountains in western MD, I think maybe 2 hours from DC or so. If you like to hike or like water activities, it's a beautiful place kind of in the middle of nowhere.
Or you could go the opposite direction and go to Cape May, NJ. If you've never been, it's at the very bottom tip of NJ and is small, old victorian beach town. DH and I love it there. We got married there, so we're kind of biased
So you're specifically looking for non-urban destinations?
(because I'd vote for Philadelphia)
Also, if you diverge from Interstate 95 and follow Old Route 1 for some of the way from D.C. to Philly there's lots of neat little things to see along the way - Winterthur, Chadds Ford Winery, Brandywine River Museum (a must if you are a Wyeth fan), Brandywine Battlefield, Longwood Gardens...
And then Philly is pure awesome, of course.
