GM names first-ever chief diversity officer

General Motors Co. on Monday said it has named its first-ever chief diversity officer, an award-winning former diversity director for the U.S. Navy.

Retired Navy Capt. Kenneth J. Barrett previously worked as the Under Secretary of Defense's Acting Director in the Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity in Washington, D.C. While working for the U.S. Navy, Barrett helped it reach historic levels of minority and female officer additions, according to a news release.

"Diversity is and has been a key component of our success including diversity of workforce and diversity of customer base ? it can only make us a better company," GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson said in a statement. "That's why we've created this new position and filled it with a proven leader like Ken. His strengths and track record in diversity will help us achieve the leadership position we're committed to reaching in this crucial area of the business."

Barrett will report to Cynthia J. Brinkley, vice president of GM global human resources.

Re: please explain the outrage because i just don't get it.

  • People are outraged? By a company trying to reach a broader consumer base?

um... yeah, I'm not seeing it either.

A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • Is it the Affirmative Action type of outrage, like "oh no, now good people will get passed up just to hire some estrogen?"

  • 1984 was evoked.  and ZOMG MY TAXES PAY FOR THEM TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST ME!!!!11!!1!!!

i do particularly like this comment:

Did Mr. Barrett promote the staffing of female sailors on submarines? Did he modify the fleet-wide testing for advancement to benefit minority applicants?

  • I'll take union members are pretty damned racist and sexist for $1000, Alex.

And that's honestly my best guess. It sounds like diversity, we don't need no stinking diversity deal to me.

  • I'm confused. I don't see the reason for outrage either.
