Poll: Traveling for FUN races - 5k, 10k, half, or full

DH and I were talking about taking a trip each year to do a "fun" race. I'm thinking in the realm of things like the Color Run, Rock N' Roll marathon, etc but on all different levels of distance (neither of us are marathon runners... yet).   Just looking for some suggestions.

What are some of the most fun, interesting runs that you know about out or have done?

Thanks!

Re: Poll: Traveling for FUN races - 5k, 10k, half, or full

  • I'd highly recommend any of the Disney running events.  They usually have multiple distances in the same weekend.  I ran the Princess Half and it was awesome.  They also have a Royal Family 5K that weekend, I think.

  • Races I've traveled (2+ hours to):

Traverse City Bayshore Marathon - beautiful, scenic, great little town with fun wineries

Detroit Marathon - wanted to do my 1st full in my hometown; don't hate ;)

Glass City Half in Toledo - well organized

Hot Chocolate 15K in Chicago - fun for a carefree girls' weekend

Army 10-Miler in DC - needs work, for a non-inaugural event it had *issues*

  • I've traveled in-state for two really fun half ironman races. Grand Columbian in Coulee City, WA (About 4 hours east of Seattle) and Chelanman Multisport weekend in Lake Chelan, WA (about 3 hours east of Seattle). Both fun and beautiful races. Chelan Multisport weekend includes a 70.3, Olympic distance, sprint tri, try a tri, half-marathon, 10k and 5k.

Lake Chelan is the Palm Springs of Washington. I LOVE it there. Beautiful, hot, wine country!

  • The Disney Tinkerbell half was well worth travelling for.  I plan on travelling for the Griffith Park trail half marathon in L.A. this fall too.

I think this tri looks like it would be a pretty awesome event, but I'm not a tri person (yet).

  • We've traveled a lot for races. Bay to Breakers in San Francisco has been my favorite by far. It was crazy fun!
  • I also really liked the Camp Pendleton Mud Run.
  • i am desperately hoping i get to travel to san francisco in october for the nike women's half. we'll see by the end of this week, or so i'm told.

i've also been lobbying like mad to do one of the half marathons at disney world, but i don't think it's gonna happen this year.  grrrrrr.

Along these lines the London marathon always looks fun.

If you're looking at OS the Sydney Bridge run is a classic for scenery (9k, half or full) and I've wanted to do the Outback/Uluru race (6k, 11k, half and full)

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.

A bunch of us got in last year. I ended up not going because of the price of the weekend. It was absurd. I also heard the race was not planned well. Kind of a cluster ***.
  • Well, I've never ran it, but I'm dying to do the Maui Marathon someday.  There is also a 5k with it, I think.

Or there's also an Xterra trail race on Oahu that I would love to do.  I was actually there a couple years ago around the time of the race, but we were leaving the day before :(   I was so sad.

I'm travelling this coming fall with a friend to Savannah for the RnR half, hopefully it's worth it.

  • I've always wanted to get a team together to to the Reach the Beach relay from the White Mtns to the ocean in NH.  As for races I've done, the Newport, RI half was really a beautiful course and Newport is a fun town to spend a weekend in.
  • I did the Cooper River Bridge Run 10K this spring and it was tons of fun.  I would definitely do it again.  It's in Charleston and was really pretty.  It is large (40K+) and they had significant issues this year but they issued an apology and reduced the size for next year and are working on the issues it seems.  I'd run it again even with the issues they had; I really enjoyed it.

The Tower of Terror run at WDW looks cool.  I just want the medal.

The Flying Pig half/marathon in Cincinnati is really popular too.

I live here, but it's a really, really cool race. The course support is phenomenal.

This year I'm traveling to run in Leadville, CO, and I'm hoping that Detroit will end up being my fall marathon. I really want to make it to a DC race, one of these days, too.

  • Disney Princess was my first half.  It was a fun thing to do and I plan to do 2 more Disney races (Tower of Terror in Sept. and Tinkerbell in Jan) but Princess was so crowded that I consider these races to just be fun events to do with friends.

There's a good chance that I'm running this! :) We'll have to discuss as it gets closer.

OP, I traveled 2 years in a row for RnR San Diego. I love that race. I'm traveling to Huntington Beach for Surf City in February and I really want to run the San Fran Marathon one of these years. I should probably just move to CA. lol Marine Corps in DC is also on the list. I also did Ragnar FL Keys in January and had a freakin blast. Probably the most fun I have ever had running.

  • I was just thinking about this, but more for a reason to visit a friend. As in- hey lets do a Truckee race- so that I can visit a friend who lives up there.

  • I went to Chicago for the Hot Chocolate 15K.  I thought it was a lot of fun.

I also "traveled" for the Krispy Kreme Challenge in Raleigh, but that was only a few hours away from me.

It's neat seeing some of the races shared on here.
