DVC members? A couple of questions

We are starting to look into this.  DD is 6 next month and son is 9 months.  We typically travel to Disney every other year.

We used a friend's RCI timeshare and stayed off property but I would really like our own timeshare from this point on.

We never had time to really stop and ask about it but would love to have a better understanding on it.

I just want to hear from those who have it.  How expensive is it and do you find it to be worth it?

Traveling to Disney a little more than we do is not an issue timewise just financially.  I'm just trying to see if this is worth it for us

Re: DVC members? A couple of questions

  • My mom and I own at 3 different properties (Saratoga Springs Resort @ WDW in FL, The Villas at the Grand Californian @ DLR in CA, and Aulani in Hawaii).

DVC works off of a point system and you can bank points for 1 year. You can also borrow points from the following year so you can use up to 3 years worth of points at once (banked points from previous year+ current years points+ borrowed points from the following year).

You are not limited to just staying at Disney Resorts.  They have multiple trading options and we have used our points to stay at The Royal Garden Hotel in London and The Fairmont in San Francisco.  You can use them for Adventures by Disney, Disney Cruise Line, and a ton of timeshare properties all over the world.

There is a minimum buy-in required and I believe it might be 150/160 points. It will probably be about $17,000 to get started with the minimum # of points.  150 points can easily get you a 1 bedroom villa in the off season and the mid season. If you plan on going over holidays you will either need to use 2 years worth of points OR buy more points.

We live 78 miles away from Disneyland so we use our points to go up a few times a year for the weekend.

This is just a really brief overview so if you have more specific questions I can provide a more detailed answer.  If you want to talk to a DVC rep or get more info I can also give you contact details for my DVC person :) She is awesome and full of info.

  • We aren't DVC members, but here is a good summary of how DVC points work- http://allears.net/acc/dvc.htm

It's a hefty out lay of money the first year. Might try looking into buying resale too (which is discussed below in the article).

No advice on the DVC sorry.I have a question for you though. We are booked off-property in 2 weeks with RCI points and was just wondering where you stayed and how it was? We are staying at Orange Lakes resort.

We stayed at Sheraton Vistana about 3 times and loved it!  We stayed in a newer condo this past time and it was beautiful.  We had an updated kitchen and bathroom.  The resort is just minutes from downtown disney.

I heard of Orange Lake but have never stayed there.  I hope you like it!

  • Thanks everyone for the info!  I'm going to check out the allears site to get a good run down of it.  We wanted to stop by a kiosk and talk about it on our trip but never found the time.

We love the Vistana too!  DD and I are going to Disney in about a month and staying OP for the first time.  I am going to miss the conveniences of the Vistana and having a kitchen to pack lunches and eat breakfast each day.
