Has anyone here been to Saudi Arabia?

I'm just curious because my best friend's dh took a job there and she will stay behind. Mainly because of how women are treated and she has her job here. They will try to see each other every three months and make it work for the time he's planning on being there. But I can see it's hard on her and she's already thinking about going there to visit. Has anyone been and how is it being a woman there?

Re: Has anyone here been to Saudi Arabia?

  • I've never been, but I know a few women who have lived there as trailing family members. However, they lived on the corporate compounds, so within the little microcosms of ex-pat life, they didn't really have to deal with different treatment of women. The only things they complained about were having their shipments rifled at customs and having random pages torn out of women's magazines when they arrived because the images were considered too revealing.

  • That's interesting to hear how different it is. It sounds like you can make it "your own little world" within the compound then. Thanks for sharing;)

I bet a million nest dollars they kept those pages for themselves.

  • I grew up in Saudi Arabia, and my DH works there (we live in Bahrain though, our compound as adults was not nearly as amazing as the one we grew up in). Do you know where your friend's DH is going to be? There is a little bit of difference say if she is going to Riyadh as opposed to Khobar/Dammam. I'm not saying SA is the best place to live (I would only live there if DH had a job with a certain company), but I think everyone hypes it up to be some awful place, they have tons of Western restaurants and stores, and I actually prefer to grocery shop there b/c I can find a lot of imported goods and great produce. Right? Who knew? Anyway, if you have any other questions, let me know!
