Any Dutch nesties?

Do we still have Dutch nesties? I am going to Amsterdam and the Hague in May and I am looking for some ideas, travel advice, and restaurant recs.

I was hoping to see the tullips but it seems that it has been cold and rainy for the last few weeks. :(

  • There are tulips in the Jardin de Luxembourg right now. Come to Paris!

But, sorry, no advice on Amsterdam. It has been about 10 years since I was last there.

  • I will think about it and give you some recs for sure! You can go to the Keukenhof to see the tulips (and that the weather currently is not too great is positive for the tulips otherwise they would have already perished by May). Another fun thing to see but also very touristy like Keukenhof is Zaanse Schans (lots of windmills). Do you like museums, because there are quite a few nice ones in both Amsterdam and The hague. What kind of food do you like? If you give me some more info I can give you better recs.
  • I was hoping this was going to be a discussion of the PM and Cabinet resignations.  I was looking for a "local" take on the situation, because I was under the impression that The Netherlands had a stable government/economy and was mostly outside the financial situation in Europe.

    Have fun on your trip.

  • I would especially love restaurant recs in Amsterdam. What are the typical dishes and desserts there?

  • Typical Dutch cuisine really isn't all that exciting and not something you'd want to pay good money for in a restaurant unless it's winter and snowing and cold.

Make sure you go to an Indonesian restaurant though, and order the rice table. it has a zillion different dishes and is awesome. I highly recommend Sama Sebo near the Rijksmuseum (where Rembrand's nightwatch is) as a restaurant.

Besides that I recommend that for restaurants you stay away from the true tourist traps, which is easy enough if you stay away from restaurants in streeds that have 'Leidse' in them. That area is great for having a beer and hanging out, but don't eat there unless you really like to pay too much money for inferior food.

The Keukenhof's website should be able to tell you how many flowers they still expect to have when you get here, and that truly is the premier flower watching place in the country.

In the Hague I only know the bars on 'het Plein' where I hung out when I volunteered in the parlemental buildings across the street, so, well, not much help there.

There are my Responses for amsterdam.

I have a bunch for the Hague too but at home (on iPhone now).  I will send later.

You are going on an apartment hunt right?  I hope you find some place awesome.

I agree with NLfoodie. In Amsterdam I can recommend restaurant Tempo Doeloe (also Indonesian) http://www.tempodoeloerestaurant.nl/  in the Utrechtse straat. Also De Twee Grieken http://www.iens.nl/restaurant/375/amsterdam-de-twee-grieken  is nice (Greek). For lunch I recommend Puccini http://www.yelp.nl/biz/puccini-bomboni-amsterdam-2 and make sure you'll get some chocolate cake in or visit the chocolate store next door! I would actually just walk around in the area called De Jordaan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordaan and see if there is anything that appeals to you.

In Den Haag I recommend Garoeda  http://www.garoeda.nl/ (Indonesian). Or Bao's Kitchen (fusion asian) http://www.baoskitchen.nl/wb/pages/. Some cute places are in this area: http://www.nlstreets.nl/EN/shopping/den-haag/denneweg--65/

For the best french fries ( a national snack/treat) go to Bram Ladage in the Spuistraat.

For pie/cake and a coffee or a hot chocolate try Dudock on Buitenhof.

In Scheveningen in the harbor (not the boardwalk!) there are some really cool restaurants and cafes with nice views too!

Museumwise I recommend the Rijksmuseum and Van Goghmuseum in Asmterdam and Gemeente museum in Den Haag. I nice visit is to Van KLeef distillery where you can book a tour with a tasting (many liquors with some meditarian snacks) http://www.vankleef.org/index.php .  For a nice bar visit Huppel the pub (a lot of nice beers on tap and a great collection of whiskey and owned by a friend of mine) http://www.dehuppel.nl/

Hope this will get you started!
