Crib skirt question

I am sewing a crib skirt for my sister in law. The max drop of her crib is 22 inches. How long should make the crib skirt? Do I make it so just long enough for the lowest setting or do I make it the longest at 22 and rehem later for her?

Re: Crib skirt question

  • I made mine fit the max drop so that it would look nice when it was on the highest setting (which it will be on for at least the first six months). Then, when we lowered it, we just pulled the fabric up so that it was the right length and tucked the excess under the mattress. (Mine was just a simple box pleat, so there wasn't much excess fabric.)

  • The crib skirt that came with the bedding set is long enough to reach the ground on the lowest setting, but a bit short on the highest. That said, it never bothered me, and you still couldn?t really see a lot under the crib.

  • I'd make it long enough that it almost touches when it's on the highest setting but pools just a little when dropped. If it's a box pleat, you can always give her some hem tape and say "iron this on when you want to take the skirt up". (Box pleat, by the way, was super easy. I have a Big 3 pattern at home for it and it was the first thing I have ever sewn from a pattern.)

  • Thanks this is what I was planning to do just wanted some confirmation.

  • I did a crib skirt for a friend that had two different lengths. One side had a 25" drop, and the other had a 15" drop. Her crib was in the corner of the room, so only two sides were visible. When she lowered the crib, she just flipped the skirt around.

However, if I had to do it over again, I'd go with this: http://itsgreattobehome.net/2012/04/19/how-to-sew-a-no-fail-crib-skirt/

  • I made mine to fit the highest mattress setting and when we dropped it down (we skipped the middle settings), I hemmed it to fit.
