Anyone Flown Air Tran?

I'm not going to even bother looking up reviews online since all airlines are torn apart on the internet...

Going on a girls' trip this summer - it's nearly $400 per person LESS to fly out of Midway on Air Tran than from Ohare on United or American.  It's looking pretty good to me right now because that means we can stay an extra night and/or stay somewhere nicer. I *think* it's worth it...

Any major horror stories?

Re: Anyone Flown Air Tran?

  • No horror stories, but just know they tack on fees for EVERYTHING.  Not enough to make up the $400 difference, but they charge more fees than most airlines I'm used to flying.

They're merging with Southwest, no?  So if you have a SWA Rapid Rewards account, maybe hold onto your ticket information and see if you can get credit for that flight.

  • We flew AirTran to/from Florida and it wasn't anything special, but no complaints either.

  • No horror stories, but but is your typical no-frills airline.

Ditto. I don't know what fees they charge because when I flew them, I only had a carry-on, but it was fine.

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.
  • I have a major horror story, but it is from like 8 years ago.  There was a mechanical problem with the plane, so we had to make an emergency landing (on an emergency runway, which is kind of a scary experience because of the fire trucks and water cannons and such that come rushing after you), and then couldn't get on another flight until the next morning (we were going to a wedding so that wasn't an option, so we rented a car and drove 8 hours).  I didn't think they handled it well.

I would fly them again though.  That was a long time ago.

  • Several times, no issues.
  • Yep, everything has been fine! It's like $6 per way to have the ability to choose your own seat... for us it was worth it this time since we're flying to Puerto Rico.

  • They charge for carry on, too. And for check-in at the airport. And it was kinda dirty. It's still worth it to save that much.

Yeah, this is definitely a little weird.  Still, it seems worth it to save nearly $1200 between us.

Midway isn't all that convenient, but it's not the worst.  Their website says $20 for checked baggage, but carry-on is free.  I saw that there's a fee for picking your seat, or you can get a seat "for free" when you check in.  A flight to Cancun from Chicago is just under 4 hours, so I don't think we'd really care if we had to sit separately.

The only other thing that's weird - the flight I'm looking at is a non-stop; that's a non-negotiable for us.  However, the itinerary I'm looking at (the only non-stop) says "subject to government approval" or something odd like that.  I can't even imagine what that's about - none of the 1-stop itineraries say that!  I'd hate to hike to Midway if the itin. changes to a 1-stop or, worse yet, some sort of cancellation.

No mention of the "subject to..." thing on Expedia or Orbitz.

  • No problems with the airline flights have always been on time they havent lost my bags. I don't like their seat pitch,  only 30/31 for long flights, DC to FL DC/BOS are fine.

They like to change flights around if you book early. If this happens they usually waive the seat picking fee to make up for moving stuff around.  If they make your non stop flight disappear ask for a note on your file to be moved back to the non stop if they put it back on the schedule. (we had a lot of flight changes for our San Juan flight last year, in the end we were on our original flights, we'd booked in Sept for Feb flights )

AirTran doesn't charge for carry ons

Do you have them confused with Spirit?

    Cancer sucks.
  • Air Tran doesn't charge for carry-ons.  They charge to check a bag (like most other lines) and to pick your seats in advance.

I prefer to fly AirTran, they are almost always cheaper than everything else leaving Pittsburgh.  Word of caution though - most of their flights connect through ATL, give yourself at least an hour to get through there. Definitely have got stuck for the night due to missed connections.

  • Flown with them many times, never a problem what so ever!

  • I flew across country with air tran and wouldn't do it again to save a few bucks, but for $400, I would think about it. The plane we took was old, and we were so cramped in the legroom area. There were no leg space at all, so I definitely regretting bringing my larger purse. However, my brother took the exact flight a few months later and had a lovely time, got free drinks and had a exit row so he wasn't bothered by the legroom factor. It's just based on experience. But for that much savings, I say go for it.
  • I flew AirTran from BWI to San Juan about 2 months ago.  Nonstop there, connection through ATL coming back.  It was fine, and on time.  No frills, certainly, but that's why I booked it -- it was cheap.

I did not pay for a carry on or for checking in.  I checked in online, picked my seat when I did, and printed my boarding pass when I got to the airport.  No fees.  No hassles.

  • Really like AirTran, other than the fact they charge you for seat selection.
  • Another no real complaints here. Used to fly them all the time during college to get home for a quick weekend. I'd definitely choose them to save that much.

  • Thanks for the post. We are waiting for them to open up reservations for the rest of November. We want to go to PR on our way to BVI. We will have a couple day flexibility for reservations. DH is concerned we have not already gotten airline reservations.

We fly SW frequently are are looking forward to the merger completion. I did receive notice yesterday on merging rewards. So it is progressing.

  • We flew them from MDW to Ft Lauderdale in Oct and had no issues.  Like pp said; they charge $20 for first bag checked and carry-on is free.

For a short flight and the cost savings; I'd definitely book them again; especially with the upcoming SW rewards merging.

  • We just flew on them between BWI and Punta Cana last week. We had trouble with the check in both times. It feels like a "gotcha" type of business. They recently (as of 3/1/12) reduced the dimensions of carryons. I was very careful with my packing and made sure that I stayed well within limit. The checkin lady at BWI was very unpleasant. she made me place my little suitcase on the scale against the side of the counter, then took out a ruler and measured all three dimensions, including measuring the thickness of the suitcase as it sits slanted from the counter wall. She then barked at me that it's 11 inches instead of the allowed 10. My suitcase is less than 10 inches thick, but since it does not sit flush against the side of the counter, that's how she got me. I'm a frequent flyer, but have never seen an airline go to the length they go to in order to charge fees.

For a $400 fare difference, I'd say go for it. Just be prepared to check your luggage and don't count on a friendly experience.

  • I have flown on them many times to Detroit and around the U.S. It's no frills but better then Frontier in my opinion. If you have a lay over in Atlanta give yourself time. Our airport is huge and getting to one terminal to another can take along time.

I would definitely use them to save some money.
