"clicky" knee

For the past week or so, my right knee has been clicking pretty loudly every single step when I go up stairs.  There is no pain, no swelling, etc.  I've been able to do yoga and go on my regular (fairly short--3-5 miles) runs without an issue, but I wonder if I'm being stupid to basically be ignoring it.

Any idea what it is?  Would you do anything about it or wait for it to start hurting?  It just started up out of nowhere...

thanks.

Re: "clicky" knee

  • My right knee clicks, pops, grinds, etc etc but it started as just clicking.  Not to scare you, but I'd see your doctor or a sports medicine doc.  Mine was the frist symptom of an overuse injury.
  • Mine clicks when I go down stairs. No pain, no grinding, not bothersome in any way. I suppose if it hadn't done this for years and years, I might be more concerned.
  • When my knee did this I eventually had an MRI and found out that I had torn my meniscus.  I would keep an eye on it and if you start to feel pain, have it checked out for sure.  I ignored the pain and "clicking" for a few months and wish I would have gone in sooner.

  • This happened to me a little over a month ago. Out of nowhere my right knee was super loud and popping constantly when going down the stairs or bending it. I had my sports doc take a look and she said it was the patella tendon that was too tight due to insanely tight quads and hamstrings. She massaged it in two different sessions and I just was more diligent about foam rolling those areas pretty deep and it just went away. I was freaking out, though, because it was so loud. But like you, no pain no swelling.

  • Can you tell where it is clicking?  Inside the knee?  On the knee cap?  My right knee clicks on the knee cap.  It is the tendons not tracking properly which can be remedied by strengthening my quads (without doing lunging exercises).  It doesn't hurt at all and I also only have the problem when going up stairs.  If I out my hand on my knee cap while walking up the stairs, I can feel the tedons with my hand not tracking right.
