Fashion question - are kids all into the 80s look these days?

{title purposefully worded as though written by an old fart}

On Sunday we went out to breakfast after church, and saw various young(er) folks in 80s fashion.  We saw young girls wearing long shirts with wide belts, light-brown boots, and hair bows. One guy, who probably was around 18 or so, had a peach polo shirt, khaki shorts, and penny loafers.  Bonus - he also had an earring in his right ear.  The only thing missing was a popped collar.

Is this all the rage now or did we stumble into the least fashionable diner in all of Pennsylvania, which would really be saying something?  FYI, none of these people were together, so this wasn't a group/club matter.

Re: Fashion question - are kids all into the 80s look these days?

  • I live in philly and I see all sorts of fashion and I'd say I think the 80s are kind of coming back. At least bright colors are a big thing now. I have recently bought 2 pairs of brightly colored jeans. I think they're fun! I haven't seen any hair bows that I recall. The guys wearing earrings seem to have been around for awhile. The boy you described sounds like a typical outfit that I've seen guys wearing for awhile, doesn't scream 80s to me.
  • I think the 80s are coming back, although I got comments from the other mom's at the pick up line at school last week for my peg legs (I pegged them while riding my bike to meet DS at school)

It is most definitely a prototypical 80s look.  The fact that it doesn't strike you as such scares me because it means the look truly is back, LOL.

    ETA: Just remembered - I've also been seeing leg warmers.  {{shudders}}

LOL. Yeah I guess I remember guys dressing like that in high school and college and I'm 27 so it seems it's been around awhile, at least 10+ years.

And oh yeah, leg warmers are definitely back.

    Welcome to the 80s!

  • One of the young girls from another department in my office and I went to the mall and she bought a neon bandeau top (it was like a giant bandaid) with a sheer black long sleeved button down to go over it. It was beyond my comprehension.
  • We went to the mall over the weekend and saw Vanity selling all kinds of neon t-shirts like everyone had in the 80s.  Then we saw a girl in full-on 80's Girls-Just-Want-To-Have-Fun getup.  I think it is coming back.

So, do I break out the stirrup pants first?  Or legwarmers?  Or the Oakleys?

  • So I guess by the time my kids are preteens/teens, the grunge look should be back then?

  • I cringe when I see them wearing docksiders.

  • It depends on the circles. A lot of people are doing the whole 90's Clarrissa Explains it All/ Blossom type look with the mom jeans, loafers and vests. I saw a crap ton of that foolery on chictopia.com It was kind of gross.

I think fashion is really glossing over several decade trends. Wide leg denim and platforms are getting to be big. I hate flat platforms. They're so Frankenstein.

It really depends on where you're at in the country in regards to HS fashion. haha.

  • The 80s look has been back, or started coming back, for a while; it just sounds like people are ramping it up and taking more and more of it.  Sad.  I guess there really is nothing new under the sun anymore.

Does it seem to be coming back for older women?  Ie, are we going to have Dallas-style dresses with massive shoulder pads again?

  • I live in NYC, and the 80's fashion has been back for a couple years. I've even seen people wearing PARACHUTE PANTS!!!!! (that could be early 90's don't remember). I draw the line there. Well actually, I draw the line at line backer shoulder pads, mullets, and leg warmers.

I don't mind most of the 80's style that I've seen though. I think people are just more conscience about what works and luckily, so far hasn't gone too far into the 80's.

  • Yes.  We are officially now so old that we are cool again.  For a brief time, anyway.

    no. no. no.

the rule is that if you were old enough to wear it the first time around, you aren't allowed to wear it again.

    no.

(thinking I should scan in some of my pictures from high school and college. I graduated HS in 1986 and college in 1990, so, you can imagine.)

  • I think so. My niece (15) wears a lot of stuff that screams 80s. The bright colors, off the shoulder cutoff t-shirts, etc etc. I am also seeing a lot of blouses with the shoulder slits, which is hideous IMO.

That is one era of fashion I was hoping was dead for good.

I firmly believe in that rule and was going to add it to my post, but didn't want to offend those who sound as if they might be wearing those clothes again.  Or, maybe they weren't old enough the first time around?  Now I really feel old!

  • Are side ponytails back??? If they are, that would be way totally awesome.
  • I think so...

All I know is - the 90s are never coming back for me.  I'm thinking early 90s grunge/90210 the early years.  That sh*t was awful.

I don't remember enough of the 80s to have the same reaction to it, lol.

Yes, in a big way.  I could never rock that look, though.

  • I walked into Target the other day and it was neon heaven--shoes, pants, you name it.  I felt like I took a time machine back to 1989.

  • Not too long ago I saw a girl with crimped hair, big plastic bangels, leggings and a sweatshirt that looked like she stole it from the set of Flash Dance.

    So, maybe?

  • 80s fashion, sadly, is back.  However, the boy you described was common in my HS and college days and I normally think of that as preppy style (aka always around).  lol.  FWIW, I am 30.
  • i think in some areas, it's been back for a long time (five years or more) - we lived in milwaukee 5 years ago and i remember being at a concert and seeing kids wearing members only jackets. some of the look i don't mind (ray bans, duckie dale inspired look for guys, off the shoulder shirts for girls), but probably on people much younger than me. and i think i'll sit out the rubber bracelets and lace gloves (i pray those don't come back).

now the 90's...i've seen lace up boots this year. i can't explain the style, but i had a pair during the grunge years (i had combat boots too - but what i'm thinking of is slightly more feminine, and worn with long flowy dresses). i do not want that look to come back at all.

  • How about these?

  • 80s are totally back.  In a twisted sort of way.  I've not seen anyone flat out rocking rolled and pinned jeans with jellies and off-shoulder giant sweatshirts, but I've seen pieces of 80s fashion paired with other styles.

The other day at Target DH pointed out a rack of slap bracelets.  *groan*

  • Yes and it's back in a bad way.
