It is likely that we will be relocating to another state. We own our current home (and would be open to selling or renting it because houses in our area are rented much faster than they are sold) Anyway...would you buy a house if your husband was starting a new job or would you rent something for a few months to make sure the job is a good fit. I dont want to get stuck in a state just because we own there- what do people usually do? This is completely new territory for me.

Re: Relocation Advice
I would rent for two reasons: one to make sure he likes the job and to figure out what area/schools you like best.
I agree with the other comment, unless you know this new area really well you probably dont know exactly where you want to land yet. For that reason rent for a while and see what areas you like. Not to mention if you buy in the fall/winter the market will slow down and create even more leverage for you.
It may make sense to sell your current home if there is a relocation company involved. If there isnt then listing it for rent and/or sale is probably a good option.
Rent.
We bought a new house when I was offered a job in a new area. I hadn't been in the job 6 weeks before I realized it wasn't a good fit. At 6 months, the job was so awful I was depressed and couldn't get out of bed. (I had taken a signing bonus, so I had a one year contract.) You just never know how things will turn out. Never buy anywhere until you're positive you'd want to stay there for years if you had to.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
Agreed.
My thoughts exactly. Renting will allow you time to settle in as well. You won't feel rushed to make a decision on a house and you can take your time find just the right area.

we've done this twice now, about to do it again and we ALWAYS rent first. Gives you time to figure out areas of town you like best, what commute/traffic patterns are, etc.
Plus, if the job bombs out then you can move on easily.
