BR- Bottles

What bottles did or do you use. I have been looking into the tommee tippee bottles. I am hoping to breast feed. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I have heard a lot of talk about the Dr. Browns.  TIA again!

Re: BR- Bottles

  • We used Playtex Ventaire. We had both the wide ones and the regular ones, and she didn't care which ones we used. I liked how easy they were to clean since both ends came off.

  • I mostly BF but C uses bottles at DC.

We ended up using the Avent wide neck ones.

We tried Dr. Browns but their a PITA to clean because of all the pieces. We also tried the Playtex Drop Ins, but I didn't like having to buy the bags. I liked the Tommee Tippee ones, but C didn't like the wider nipple on the bottle, same goes for the Breast Flow ones - although both of them are recommended for BF babies, it really depends a lot on what baby likes. Some don't care and will take whatever you give them!

If you're going to BF, I would recommend getting the single pack of a few different brands of bottles. That way you can try them out and see what baby likes and then buy more of those. That way you're not stuck with a bunch of bottle you won't use.

  • The TT bottles were the ONLY bottles my cousin's breastfed daughter would take.

I think this is the route I'm going to go, like you said we have no idea what he is going to like and I don't want to be stuck with all the same bottles and he ends up hating them... Thanks for all the info

  • We use the Playtex Ventaire as well.  They were recommended to me at my consult with an MD who specializes in breastfeeding medicine and I really like them. Like Ames said, they're also really easy to clean.

Like Michelle, I also hated the Dr Browns...cleaning the parts was annoying and I don't think they "reduce spit-up/gas/colic" anymore than the Ventaire.

Kyler and I both hated the BreastFlow.  The milk would keep getting caught in the reservoir, so you have to keep pinching the sides of the nipple to get the milk to release again.  A real PITA to use for me and frustrating for Kyler.

As has been pointed out, bottle preference is really trial and error.  Some babies are super particular and others will take any kind of bottle.  I was really lucky that Kyler went between bottle and breast with no problems, but other breastfed babies can be really picky about anything that's not the boob!  Whatever bottle you choose, BE SURE to use a slow flow nipple.  Fast flow nipples can sometimes cause babies to start rejecting the breast, because they have to work harder to get milk from the boob or a slow flow nipple than they do the fast flow ones.

  • We were given a TON of Dr. Browns bottles and loved them. Charlotte wanted to eat fast so they helped not get too much air. They are a pain with parts, but it really isnt that big of a deal in the whole scheme of things. I also liked that they attached well to my medela pump. That was a huge bonus.

We used the Nuk bottles that are wide when I breast fed - this seemed to work well as well.

  • We have used Avent since day 1. (actually, since day 6 since we were in the hospital for the first 5). No complaints here !

  • We used Tomee Tipee and they worked great for us.  Alex would easily switch between the bottle and the boob with no issues.  We also never went up in nipple flow, just stuck with the #1's which they reccomend if you want to countinue BFing and giving the bottle at the same time.

I ditto Michelle's suggestion to get one bottle of a few different type to see what baby likes best.

We had these, but after awhile Ash started refusing them, and J hated them because they have so many parts. We also tried the Breastflow bottles, but he would never take them.

In the end the plain old Evenflo or Gerber bottles  were the ones he preferred and they are much cheaper!

  • Thanks ladies, I will pick up a few different bottles till we find out what the baby does the best with.

  • Other than BFing, we used Dr. Browns.  I highly suggest the Baby Bargains book - it will give you the best overview of all baby items out there and really helped us out in regards to our product choices.
