do you have any study tips?

I am struggling to read long, long chapters and retain the information. Any advice?

I am currently writing down all bolded words and completing the end of chapter exercises. I do okay on the quizzes but I'd of course love to do better.

Any recommendations is greatly appreciated.

Re: do you have any study tips?

  • Writing summaries or blurbs covering the "take home" points of articles or chapters helped me. Or like writing an abstract about it.

  • I am very bad on focusing on what I'm reading when studying.  I would read 3 pages then realize I didn't remember a single thing I read.  The only way I could really focus and take in what I was doing was to write it.  So I used to rewrite my notes multiple times to study.  Or if we got a study guide from the professor I would copy that over and over.  It can be time consuming and my hand would cramp up, but it was the only thing that really worked for me.

  • Flashcards were my go to in college.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • This might seem like a silly answer but highlighting really helps me. I always used to just read straight through and take notes in class but the material didn't always sink in. This semester I highlighted notes that I thought were important in my Economics textbook and I wound up making a 100 on the final exam.
  • I do not write or highlight in my books. They sell for more money if I don't ruin them. I use the flash card method like Stan. On the blank side I would write the name, place, event, or thing then on the lined side write the points about it instead of studying paragraphs. I'll also put the page numbers where I found the information.

  • Break it up. Read a section, do some practice problems (if there are any in your subject?) then read another section and do more practice problems, then take a break.

I know back in the day I would outline the chapter and as I read it I would fill in the details of the outline so that I didn't lose track of the big picture.

Otherwise I just plow through and hope that repetition from homework and quizzes gets it locked into my brain. I'm a tactile learner and have a short attention span so reading long chapters tends to cause snooze fests for me.

  • By the by, what type of learner are you? (Tactile, visual, etc.)

Definitely a see and do type of learner. So, both of those.

  • I used to write out what I was studying several times over, especially during my pharmacology classes. I like to waste paper ;)

  • Thank you, everyone. It seems that writing as I go will be the most beneficial to me.
