Why would telling her, "You need to do well in math and science because there is a stereotype that women are bad and math and science and you owe it to woman-kind to rise above that" be anywhere near as productive as the "we all have to do things we don't want to" discussion? We DO all have to do things we don't want to. But the reason women are disproportionately represented in math and science is because of the power of that stereotype, not the reality of it. So suggesting that it has a basis in reality is problematic and putting the burden of it on your daughter will hurt her performance not help it.
What about when women want to keep secret their plans to not return to work after maternity leave, but rather just give notice after the 6 weeks?
People tell them that it is already hard enough for women to get an advantage in the workplace because they are seen as a liability due to being able to have children and that anyone who decides to SAH while stringing the company along with mat. leave is a undoing all that woman have worked for to gain equality in the working world.
Is that related at all to this discussion, or did my brain take a unique tangent?
Re: s/o race/teaching - gender/workplace
Adults and children are not the same. You are comparing a thirty year old to an eleven year old. Eleven, it is no the job of an eleven year old to tear down stereotypes.
But no one should be an ass, regardless of what group they belong to. End of story. And lying is being an ass....as is acting like a crazy person.
