Re: Crafty people come in
Dome shape?
It looks like a metal ring with spokes, with the birds and leaves hanging from it.
Thread should be sufficient, as would stencils to repeatedly draw the birds and feathers.
I haven't figured that out yet. I have three different mobiles picked out (all DIY) and I haven't figured out which ones I'm doing or if I want to do all three. I'm thinking one above each crib (they're in different rooms for now) and one above the changing pad.
Other mobiles:

You don't see the bowl shape created by the bottom of the birds?
I think the ribbon one is super cute. You could easily do that around an embroidery hoop too.
I made a tissue pom pom one for DD's nursery back in the day. I covered a store bought one with bright green floral tape and curled some wire to hang the pom poms from the part that turns. This isn't the best picture I have of it but DD is currently asleep in my arms so I refuse to get up to get the hard drive
the problem with one that attaches to the crib vs. the ceiling is that eventually they can reach it and then it gets shoved up in a closet. She did love the music though!
I like the ribbon (last one) the best. I love the vibrant color and I think it would be more engaging/stimulating for the babies.
As for the bird mobile, I think the dome shape is achieved by having the outer strings shorter then the middle/inside. So they start short and get longer the closer they get to the middle.
Ah. Honestly, I saw a curved bottom, sure, but didn't think "inverted" when I heard dome, so I was confuzzled...
Yeah, that could be managed simply by controlling the length of thread being used.
Super cute!
We're definitely hanging them from the ceiling so we don't have to remove them when they start standing.

Sorry it's not clicky!
I have a tutorial for this! Hold on let me find it. The dome shape is made my using different length strings. You use: 2 dowels, fishing line, scrapbook paper punched into desired shape.
ETA: I can't find it now. If you are going to do the bird shape I would follow the tutorial that Smiles posted (gluing instead of stringing) so the birds are upright. But I wouldn't use the hoop/wire method for the top because I think it looks bad. Unless you can get a metal hoop.

Clicky because I was just coming here to post the exact same thing! The shape looks a bit different but I would think the principle would be the same.

Do what Mango said with the length of the thread, and then as Lace said take two birds and glue them to either side of the thread. It will keep them up right a lot better than stringing the thread through the bird.
As far as the ribbon one if you take an embroidery hoop and glue your ribbons between the two hoops and then ribbon along the edge of the outside hoop you should be good. Both are super cute!
