Anyone get Botox for chronic migraines?

Has it worked for you? I saw this in a magazine medicine treatment ad and you have to have 15 migraines a month that last more than 4 hours so I qualify to get this treatment. Just wondering if anyone has done it or was looking into it and what your experience was.

Re: Anyone get Botox for chronic migraines?

  • One of my work colleagues did -- he did not have any success with it.
  • I did!  I have had migraines since I was about 12 and I've tried just about everything out there.  I saw one of the top headache specalists in the country and she did the shots.  First she tried to control my pain through lifestyle changes and tweaking my medications.  That improved things but I was still having pain.  I believe she had to request approval from my insurance (this was before Botox was FDA approved for migraine-I think it is now??).  My insurance wanted proof that I had tried some insane number of drug treatments (10 maybe?).  I had tried 9 so my neuro called my insurance and pretty much ripped them a new one.  My insurance at the time had the worst, suckiest customer service.  Someone who has a big name insurance like Blue Cross or Anthem will hopefuly  not have as many problems although I would not be surprised if you still need pre-approval.  I ordered the Botox, picked them up at the pharmacy on the way to the neuro, then she injected it.  I will not lie-it hurt!  She did two vials the first few times then one vial after that.  It was at least 40 shots in my forehead, temples, scalp, back of my neck, shoulders and maybe behind my ears.  Each injection stung but wasn't too painful but after 40 or 50 shots I'd be shaking and a little sick to my stomach.  I have an overactive vagus response so I feel faint easily.  Most people should be fine!  The Botox vials were about $5-600.  My insurance paid 80% so I was paying almost $250 every few months plus the neuro's fee.  Not cheap but it was worth it IMO.  The Botox didn't give me 100% relief but it did improve my pain even more.  Once I stopped BCP I was pain free.  Turns out they were a huge source of my pain.  Now I only need relief meds here & there.

So, I would do it if you've tried just about everything else and are not getting relief.  You will probably need to see a neurologist or pain specialist.  Was the ad for a clinic or research study?  I would do a study but I would do more research if it was just a clinic that placed an ad.  IMO the best doctors or clinics don't need to place ads for specific treatments.  A good doctor will evaluate you and suggest other treatments before Botox.  Getting control of migraine pain can be a slow process as you & your doctor figure out what works for you.  I can't promise you that Botox will work but I know there is a treatment to improve your life.  Good luck and feel better!

Please ask any more questions about Botox or my migraines & I'll answer!

  • Thank you for all the info. It would not be a clinical study just a regular treatment. I have tried many preventatives and they either do not work, make my migraines worse or give me really bad side effects. I don't like that it would be so many shots but if I do it I hope it is works because nothing else seems to work.  I have to run but I might ask you more later.
