Houston Hotel Recs?

I will be traveling to Houston for an NFL game and am looking for a nice hotel. Doesn't need to be the closest to the stadium, but something in an area with decent bars and restaurants within walking distance and not a huge pain to get to the stadium. Thanks for any ideas!

Re: Houston Hotel Recs?

  • I live in Houston. I would stay downtown at a hotel near the metro rail line, such as the residence inn, hotel magnolia or hotel icon. You can take the train directly to the stadium for $3 round trip. Lots of great restaurants and bars downtown and nearby midtown. Let me know if you need more suggestions!

  • Thanks for your response! I have never been there, and no absolutely nothing about Houston, so any recs for good bars or restaurants you might have are welcome!!

  • The big areas to go out to bars are Midtown and Washington Ave.

Downtown I like Hearsay Gastro Lounge.  I've never eaten there but the drinks are great.

The Flying Saucer is great if you are fan of beer.  They have hundreds!  Good bar food.

The Grove at Discovery Green has great drinks and food.  It's more upscale.

If you are looking for more of a "scene", I'd suggest Celtic Gardens in Midtown or Kung Fu Bar on Washington.

If you want a traditional country bar to really experience Texas go to Wild West. (This is kind of far from downtown).

Oh the places to eat!   When I moved here 4 years ago I didn't have any idea how awesome the food would be.  My favorites: Bombay Pizza Co. (Pizza with traditional Indian flavors), The Original Ninfa's on Navigation (Mexican), El Tiempo (Mexican), Coppa (Italian), Ibiza (mix), if you are into meat I would suggest Feast...it's my husband's favorite.  I'm not a huge meat eater so this isn't my fave.  Max's Wine Dive is comfort food and amazing but the restaurant is LOUD.  Brennan's (New Orleans style, famous Houston restaurant, but expensive.  For brunch- The Breakfast Klub.  There will be a line but it moves fast.

I tried to keep my suggestions all in the downtown/midtown/washington area.  If you cab it nothing will be more $15 away.
