Miami/South Beach recommendations
We are headed to South Beach for a few days. I would appreciated any recommendations for places to eat and things to do. I definitely want to check out all the Art Deco architecture and the beach, maybe the zoo.
TIA!
Re: Miami/South Beach recommendations
Tap Tap, 819 Fifth St, is a cool little bar that I like.
The Clevelander is worth taking a look at for the poolside bar, but I have no idea what the crowd is like these days.
There are lots of nice places to eat outdoors on Lincoln Road, but all the names except Sushi Samba are escaping me right now. An outpost of one of my favorite bookstores is also on Lincoln Road- Books & Books. And there's a really fantastic ice cream place on a corner that has an Italian name. If it comes to me, I will post again.
If you want to venture off South Beach for Cuban food, my favorite places are Las Culebrinas (4700 West Flagler Street) and Versailles (on Calle Ocho, but I forget the exact address, you can google it, it's practically an institution). Meat dishes to try: oxtail (Rabo), vaca frita (beef fried in garlic), ropa vieja (shredded beef in a tomato-y sauce) or picadillo (the most boring of these options, but still pretty darned good- ground beef in a tomato-y sauce with raisins and olives). Other good sides/appetizers are ham croquetas (looooove these, but you can also get them at the Versailles outposts in the Miami airport), tamales (not like Mexican tamales), yuca frita, mariquitas (like plantain chips), tostones (mashed plantain), maduros (sweet plantain) and of course, black beans & rice.
I haven't been to the Miami zoo in ages and ages. The Seaquarium is fun if you're traveling with kids (???), but a little pricey.
The zoo is nice but it's in residential South Miami - a hike from South Beach. I used to live there and I liked the zoo a lot, but I'm not sure if I would prioritize that during a vacation stay in South Beach, unless you have a car and really want to get away from the beach for a day. I've never been to the Seaquarium.
Ditto the suggestion for Versailles if you don't mind leaving the beach. If you want to stay at the beach, Lario's on Ocean Drive is pretty good. If it's not too hot, you can eat on the patio right across from the ocean. If you happen to be in Coral Gables for any reason, Havana Harry's is one of my favorites. Lincoln Road has tons of small cafes and restaurants.
We stayed near Lincoln Road when we're in SB overnight a few years ago and I remember really enjoying Sushi Samba. I also liked walking the path along the beach.
I've dined at Zuma and I highly recommend that place. Prime 112 is an awesome steakhouse.
Havent been yet, but hakkasan should be very good. I went to the London outpost, the best cocktails ever and excellent food.

If you're ok with some suggestions slightly away from the Lincoln Rd area, Cafe Charlotte and Puerto Sagua were both amazing. Cafe Charlotte is a little hole in the wall place that has maybe 10 tables, tops. The skirt steak there is so tender and nicely seasoned. Puerto Sagua has fantastic Cuban/Mexican food and is where a bunch of locals go. We were pressed for time but would have loved to have tried their paella. I don't remember what dishes we got, but both of them were so good that we totally cleaned our plates.
Joe's Stone Crab is also a must-try if you've never had stone crabs. Joe's To Go is immediately next door and is less expensive (and quicker) if you don't want to sit down and eat in a restaurant. They have indoor seating at Joe's To Go if you're interested in staying around. The key lime pie is divine!
Forgot about Joe's Stone Crab. I wholeheartedly agree.
