Selectman Refuses to Say Pledge at Mtg

http://www.myfoxboston.com/dpp/news/local/local-selectman-nixes-pledge-request-20120425

I don't think she should be thrown out of office for this. Other people are saying she's a disgrace to our country (what?!!)

FTR, I am not American so I asked what is the attachment to the flag and the pledge?

In no short answers I was told to go home, I'm a stupid foreigner and that I was dropped on my head as a baby. Wow.

Anyway, thoughts.

P.S. I totally respect the American symbols, by the way, I was just trying to understand a bit more of the WHY behind it.

Someone told you that?!? At the Falmouth selectman's meeting?!?

I don't get the outrage over skipping the pledge, honestly.

  • Some people object to the phrase "one nation under God" in our pledge of allegiance, since it can be interpreted as violating one of our founding tenets--the separation of church and state.  Others (wrongly) believe that America was intended by the founding fathers to be a Christian nation, and that the Christian dogma should rule over our land.  Those same people also frequently interpret one's refusal to say the pledge as being anti-American.

    It's quite ridiculous, really.

  • Perhaps they had a really tight agenda and did not have time to say the pledge. :)

This is a dumb thing to get up in arms about.  I am especially amused by the commenters saying that they're not going to vacation in Falmouth anymore.  Don't worry - there will be plenty of other folks interested in using your vacation rental.

To clarify, I was not actually there I was simply placing my thoughts on the comment thread.

    Gotcha.  It's still horrible, though.

  • Yeah... the pledge is a really stupid thing to get angry about. I hate the pledge, and I hate that it's become something that people get so defensive about. I personally think it's creepy to chant my allegiance in a large group like it's some sort of cult ritual, so I've never participated. Does that mean I don't like living here in America? Not at all!! I love our current president, I have a fantastic life here, and I'm grateful for it. I don't need to mindlessly intone allegiance to a flag (and under god, just no way).

As far as why people get so angry, I think a lot of people feel that not saying it is a disrespect to our military, which seems like a non sequitur to me. Other people see it as an act of defiance toward the country, which it doesn't have to be either.

I definitely don't think the woman should be thrown out of office.

  • Stupid.  We have to provide the "opportunity" to say the pledge to every student in school every day.  That's the law.  Kids can opt out, and I would like to opt out, but I don't want to deal with the "oooooo, she's so un-American!" that would follow.

And by requiring it said, it loses its meaning.  It's just a boring, monotonous recital of words.

  • Falmouth is my husband's hometown.  All of his family still lives there.

Some comments from a relative's Facebook feed:

    Stone that witch.

    Send her to Iraq

Get out of my country if you're not proud of it.

    Ignorant.

Who does she think she is?  This is the USA.

And his family wonders why we are never going back and have declined the "gift" of his childhood home.
