I really don't know where to begin. My current carrier is AT&T, I don't want to spend $$ on an Iphone, though it looks like I could get an iphone 3 GS 8GB for free or an iphone 4 8GB (refurbished) for $50. Do I need an iphone? Do you know anyting about the HTC Inspire because I could get that for free too. I like free.
There are also some LG's and Samsungs and Blackberries I could get for free or pretty cheap, but I assume they're older models. How many GB's do I need? HALP ME!

I will be the lone dissenter and say I absolutely hated the iphone (but I hate all apple products, I don't even use an ipod) and once I switched to Droid I became a phone-a-holic. Swype is probably the single most awesome thing ever (except when I just go with what's in my brain and don't double check it, then I sound like a weirdo.)
I can't help you with GB or whatever. I just got the one that was prettiest.
Agreed (the 3G/3GS aren't 100% compatible with the latest OS). I would definitely check out the droid options too, myself.

iPhone, hands down. I recently upgraded to the 4s 16GB and I'm even more in love.
As for GB, I'm using about half of my 16, and I have a decent number of apps, but not a ton of music. I had an 8GB 3 prior to this and was fine.

Honestly, I find the iPhone very user-friendly for someone who has never had a smartphone. I had a Droid first and I barely used it (basically because my particular phone was horrible), but I'm on my iPhone CONSTANTLY. I love it.
The data plan is going to be the same either way.

Alllllllll of this. I don't even have a brazilian apps. I use email, IM, FB, sometimes Twitter, Draw Something when I do play anymore, that's about it.

The 3GS barely supports THIS release of the OS. The 3GS isn't worth it, even if it's free.

Yes. Definitely go for the 4 or 4S.
HA! True.
I have yet to fork over the cash for the 4S (am currently with the 3GS) but it's time for an upgrade and I am *this* close to dropping $300, including the extended protection.
There's nothing like an iPhone. Once you get one, it's hard to live without one.
Team iPhone here also. I still have my 3GS but it's almost time for my upgrade so I'll be upgrading to probably the 4s. Having the 3GS right now wouldn't be horrible, but you will have to think about long term since you'll have this phone for (at least) the next two years. So, I would drop the $50 on the iPhone 4.
I think you'll enjoy having an iPhone. It's very user friendly and even if you don't see yourself using the apps, you'll find that they really do have an app for almost everything.
Can vacation be now please?
If you can wait, I'd suggest giving it a few months and waiting on the iPhone 5. It's expected in October (no promises, though). If you can't wait, the 4S should be pretty great.
That was kind of the point, that getting a 3GS now is kind of silly.
Mashed, I have an ifrogz case that I actually picked up at Marshalls for cheap when mine broke. It's held up fairly well. I'm getting an Otterbox Commuter eventually, though. I think a bunch of people here have it and I liked the look/feel of it when I was groping peoples phones at the shoar.

What JoEsther is saying is that first Mashed needs to invest in a Delorean....
