In regards to cleaning, how often do you
do a big purge/declutter/reorganization of the house? Making your way through every room?
Re: In regards to cleaning, how often do you
The only room that ever requires it is the man room/computer room because that's where our filing cabinets are. We go through all the bookshelves, baskets, desk, cabinets, etc, once a year to reorganize and purge the receipts, users manuals, military papers and stuff. It could stand to be done every six months, but now that the computer room is in the basement and few people ever see it, I just don't care that much.
I'm one of those chronic purgers as far as the rest of the house goes. We always have an Airman's Attic pile going.
I need to be better about this. I am guilty about just getting rid of things because I fail to actually load the boxes/bags into the car and take them to the Airman's Attic.
I also need to set up a more organized file of all of our important documents, copies of originals, shot records for IJC to make school enrollment easier, etc. What we have now has been ravaged and was not reorganized. Le sigh. Where to start...
We go through clothes maybe once every 4-6 months. I'm saving baby stuff for #2 but it's making me twitchy b/c I'm a tosser. I choose to ignore the couple bins in the office full of H's computer/techie ***.
ETA: Sh*t's not allowed, eh? S.H.I.T.
Fly Lady it up, yo. I think that's actually how I'll attempt to keep up with stuff (at least the important stuff) after I have the babies. I stuck to it when I was working super crazy hours and it made the household stuff manageable.
Doing the purge now will make unpacking your HHG so much easier when you move. It's so annoying to get to the new house and finally get stuff delivered, only to spend tons of time sorting what amounts to garbage.
My reasoning is going to sound silly but I start with kids closets/rooms/toys because I know that it will make someone happy to have our old stuff and that makes me feel good. I'm usually so amazed by how much stuff is not needed that it encourages to move on. I do my closet next, then work my way around the house. I usually end with the garage because it's such a beast to tackle.
Have your H do his closet/uniforms before he goes that way you're not left wondering if you should really get rid of something.
I can be a sentimental hoarder so sometimes I have DH do the dirty work with that stuff. It's best if I don't know about it lol
Keep, donate, toss. Three piles. Anything not played with, donate. Anything broken/missing pieces/stained, TOSS! GL!
I ditto whoever said to have J go through his uniforms and clothes before he leaves, excellent idea so you're not questioning it.
I think B suggested it and I agree, great idea. I am going to have to go through all of his stuff and get it in totes that I don't have to reopen, deal with etc until he returns.
ETA: By that I just mean his uniform stuff, I am not going to make him stuff all of his belongings away not to be looked at until he returns. lol. I'm no that awful.
No where near often enough! I'd love to say we do it at least once a year, but I can't bring myself to toss things of DH's when he's not home, and I usually only have the time to do this stuff when he's not home.
It's a catch-22...
We badly need to do this now. Maybe I'll start with the craft room this weekend. DH will be out of town, and it's mostly my domain.
Not often enough. I did just haul out our basement & got rid of 5 garbage bags full of stuff we haven't even seen in almost 3 years. To me, that meant we didn't need it!
I try to clean out the toys every 6 months or so. LOs clothes at the end of every season. But, DH has so much stuff - clothes & such that I have NO idea what can be kept/what needs to go. I have a laundry bin FULL of his work clothes & absolutely NO where to put them while he's deployed. I'm thinking they are about to go into one of those space bag things.
I keep saying that I wish I could just throw away every.single.thing. we own & start over fresh!
