How do you pick your races?
Is there one website you use to find one? Or even a publication of all races for the year in your area?
I ask because I only have one day off a month- which makes races harder to find. I really want to fill them up with races so that I have something work towards/look forward to at the end of each moth.
TIA

Re: How do you pick your races?
around here, raceplace.com lists a lot of the races nearby. active.com does too.
ONE day off a month? my goodness, i would die.
Me too!
I also use active.com, or from my local running store
GO! St. Louis Half Marathon-2:32:13
Omaha Half Marathon 9.23.12
I had a friend tell me about my first race and at the expo when I pick up my packet and bib they also give a magazine called "Chicago Athlete" which has advertisements of all the popular races this year. Also, the expo has tents where volunteers are advertising the races of the year.
I go through these and decide which ones to do. There are so many but I must limit them.
active.com and runwashington.com
The local running stores and clubs list races on their websites as well.
I use the Washington Running Report website, which won't help you much if you don't live near DC. I also check the local running club websites for their low key races. These are usually only 5-10 bucks (no t-shirts, but usually a nice food spread) Those fit my budget much better than pricier races, and I never feel guilty about canceling last minute.

05/06 Frederick 13.1 (1:41:09)
11/04 NYCM
I use active.com, trifind.com, and some other sites specifically for open water swims to find them. Occasionally I hear about them either on FB (I "like" our local running store, the Y, etc.) or from friends.
I pick between them based on:
- travel distance
- how well run the race is (if I've done it before)
- swag offered
- cost
- distance and how well it fits into my training plan
- expected weather on race day (generalities)
- course
in no particular order.
I usually just choose two or three "big" races a year and then find races that fit into my training plan.
For example, my next big race will be a half in August, so I'll find some 5 and 10Ks that fit into that plan. Same thing for my next half in January.
I use Google and Colorado Runner.

Wherever my friends want to run, I will follow them. And local races (my city must have 4-5 half to full marathons a year, plus tons nearby) or races that my running club runs.
I've looked on halfmarathons.net
My criteria is generally just that it's not too far away and not too expensive. Swag, organization, etc is all a bonus. Apparently I'm cheap and lazy.
