Plank Question - which is more challenging?

I'm challenging myself to be able to do a 5 minute plank. If I'm going to do it though, I want to make sure that I'm actually challenging myself, and not doing the equivalent of a modified push up (on knees). So far I've been doing them on my elbows and toes, but I'm wondering if I should be doing them on my hands and toes instead. Is one more challenging than the other? Okay, let's call it what it is, is one more impressive than the other? :)

Re: Plank Question - which is more challenging?

  • I don't know if this is true for everyone, but I personally think it's harder on your hands than on your elbows.  But maybe I'm a weirdo, who knows.
  • for me, hardest is feet on a bench and elbows on a stability ball.  and for me, elbows is harder for a longer period of time, i think my shoulders would give out if i tried to hold a long plank on just my hands.  and on toes, always. Just my opinion :)

  • I may be a weirdo but i find it harder on my elbows and toes. I find hands and toes much easier but I have to wonder if that is because i do yoga regularly and that is the plank position we use in yoga. I can hold a minute with no probably on my hands but on my elbows i am about to give up at 40 seconds.

  • Hands is easier for me.  Also, side planks are easier than regular.

    I'm so weird.
