Re: I am working on my final Access project and I need help...

  • I have no experience here and quite honestly don't know what your question means.  However I did want to say hi and good luck, and I'm sure you'll do very well on this final project. :-)

  • Can I see the question?  Or you can PM it to me or something?

    Page 3, question 9.

    I know they want totals of all the investments listed by name (instead of one by one by name), but I can't seem to get there.

    The "total investment" field that they're speaking of is just one entry on a particular date.  For instance, someone may have an investment today and again in another week.  Does that make sense?

  • So, it looks like they want a summary query where you group on the name (so it would only show one entry for "John Smith") and then you sum on the InvestmentAmt field to get his total investment.  Try this SQL:

    SELECT tblMember.FirstName, tblMember.LastName, Sum(tblContribution.InvestmentAmt) AS [Total Investment]
    FROM tblContribution INNER JOIN tblMember ON tblContribution.MemberID = tblMember.MemberID
    GROUP BY tblMember.FirstName, tblMember.LastName
    ORDER BY Sum(tblContribution.InvestmentAmt) DESC;

    If you are in query design, you can select SQL View (it's on the top left for me - next to Run) and paste the above in.  Then you can go back to design view and see it that way.

    Let me know if that works and if you need help with part 2 of the question.

  •  ok...I got that part, and I got the last...

    Can I keep you on standby, lol?

  • Are you even expected to know sql, our are they expecting you to do something like a crosstab? I haven't googled your link yet

  • I'm happy to try to help....

    Sibil - she didn't need SQL, but it is an easy way for me to pass the query that I used along.  She just needed a simple summary query (I think the crosstab query was one of the next questions - those aren't my favorite!)

  • I just don't want her to get accused of cheating if she uses something she hasn't been taught :)
