Help me plan a birthday party!

My birthday is on a Friday this year in June, and it has been several years since I have done anything for my birthday.  After what I have been through, I would like it to make it fun this year.

So far, most of my friends have that date open so I can plan something.  Some of my friends will be commuting 3 hours (they are welcomed to stay at my place overnight) I want it co-ed so my friend's spouses can join.  What would be fun and worthy of traveling for?

I live in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.  One idea is there is a nice Italian restaurant that has indoor Bocce ball game, appetizers served meals and drinks all in one place.  But that will get too pricey for me to pay for everyone.

 Any ideas?

Re: Help me plan a birthday party!

  • Do you have a nice yard or something? I did a cook out last year for my birthday and it was awesome!! It was so nice to be surrounded by so many wonderful friends, just relaxing and drinking. If you have a lot of people that might be the more economical option... then if people come in for the weekend you could do something with them on a different evening and if you'd like to treat, you could.

If you want, you could always decorate for the party too, but you must have a cake and blow out the candles!

  • What about wine tasting?  And I don't see why you have to pay for everyone?

I should have a nice yard by June.  I will have grass installed on May 5th and a nice vegtable garden growing by then.

That would be easier to do but not sure what to do that would be entertaining for the guys.  It seems like it is harder to convince the guys to these sort of thing?

I would be up to that but would need suggestions to get started as I have never done one before.  As for paying, I really do not know what the proper etiquette would be.

  • How many friends are you going to have?

The pool at Coppola winery is amazing. The cabanas are usually 125 and include admission for 4 and wine tasting, but I just saw a deal on Gilt City today and they are only $80 through them. The pool cafe is really tasty too. Something like that might be fun?

Are you not trying to stray to far from home? If you don't mind my asking are you closer to the South Bay, East Bay, North Bay, etc.? (or you could PM if you prefer? or not :)).

Let the guys man the grill or have them set up a volleyball net or some other sort of game...

I live in South Bay but have friends scattered all over the Bay.

So far I have only asked 6 people and plan to ask a lot more if they are available.   The only problem is that it is the same weekend as Father's Day but so far it is doable with the ones I have asked.  They would prefer to know exact details  in advance so they can better decide how to split Fathers Day weekend.

  • I like either the wine tasting idea or DIY party at your house.  Guys love to grill, get some lawn darts, horsehoes, corn hole things, etc.  Sounds like fun either way!

Unfortunatley my yard is not big enough for volleyball, there is a giant shed taking up a third of the lawn space which has been converted to a playhouse for my son.

Though the patio is HUGE.  I also have a very long paved driveway that can be used for something and a small yard in front.

Gotcha.  Then music and beer makes the patio a dance floor.  Women will have fun, men will watch them shake it.

What about the corn hole game or something similar for the driveway?

I had to Google corn hole game to know what it is... it is very doable in the driveway.  Thanks!  Something for me to think about.
