Poll: board etiquette

I was just thinking about how much it drives me crazy when someone asks for help/suggestions on the board, people chime in, and then the OP never comes back to say thank you or give feedback.

This may be due in part to my raging hormones, but whatever ;)

What drives you crazy?

Re: Poll: board etiquette

  • It sometimes bothers me, but I am also guilty of this at times, mostly because something usually comes up and I get busy, and when I get to see the answers it's pages back. But most of the time I do try to post a minimum "thank you".

  • It use to be alot easier to come back to an OP and say thank you but since they changed the "My Posts" it is super annoying - if you post on multiple posts the OP kind of gets lost.

  • I try and say thank you or answer any follow-ups, but I'm usually online only during the day and tend to forget by the next morning.

Also I think it depends on if you read the board in bump mode or not.

  • I agree with that.  If you're asking for suggestions, you are obviously coming back to read the suggestions, so the least you can do is say thank you to those who have taken the time to help.

I also dislike when people post the "help me find a dress/shirt/shoes, etc." and don't give any info like budget or color or ANYTHING.  It's just so open-ended.

I guess you caught me on a bad day because I have another.  Ha ha.  Regarding the quote function... it annoys me when people are responding to the OP, yet still quote the OP.  It makes posts SO long to scroll through.  I understand using it when you're responding to someone else in the thread, or if there's a specific part of the OP you want to refer to, but not when you are just generally responding to the OP.  Similarly in the OOTD posts, when people are saying thank you to someone who complimented them, they leave the whole trail in the quote, including their picture.  I guess I hate scrolling through long posts. LOL.

This is what I was going to say. It drives me nuts.

    This bothers me too.

  • My current complaint isn't really a complaint, but more of a confusion. On the OOTD posts is it considered rude to not thank each individual person that says they like your outfit? I always get overwhelmend with the "thank you...no thank you" posts so I rarely go back to say thanks until the end of the day so I can knock it out at once. I feel bad not saying thanks, but I also hate to fill up the thread with multiple posts that really just say "thanks!".

Also - it bugs me when people pop over here for help/suggestions and maybe one person answers them. It's like it's just the OOTD thread now and one or two from regulars that will get answered, but there's no real "activity" and the same few regulars end up going back and pinging in on all the questions. Lately it just feels more like we've got a "look at my outfit, look at what I bought" feel going on than actual dialogue.

  • I agree with all of these. My biggest is the same as OP. I hate when the original poster doesn't follow up to answer questions. The same goes when someone does ask the OP a question they answer then nothing. Seems like nothing gets answered.

    Haha agreed, it's awkward.

It drives me nuts when people post vague subjects like, "Have you ever..." or "Would you..." or "Help me find..."

It's often something extremely specific, like, "Have you ever gone skydiving with bengal tigers in Nepal?"

You're far more likely to get relevant responses if you are specific in your subject.

Kind of along the same lines: When people DO provide some requirements, but some posters completely ignore them and rec something either totally out of one's budget (one of the biggest deal breakers, IMO) or otherwise completely different than for what the OP is searching ;-)

  • it totally bugs me when people don't come back to say thank you, but I also have to agree it sucks that they changed the "my posts" link and it is much harder to keep track of posts.

however, if I'm the OP and specifically asked a question, I feel like it's hard to forget that I wanted advice!

  • Right now? Everything (see ticker).  lol  Wink

  • I get annoyed at the overuse of the quote function in the OOTD posts. For the love of god, there is no need to quote a picture! Just say reference the poster and say what you need to say. For example, thanks for the compliment! Or, I got the dress at Saks, etc.

Everything mentioned already, plus definitely this. Also, it's annoying when they start a convo back and forth and you get these multiple quoted long a**ed posts with the pic and all, totally unnecessary...

I think I've guilty of the picture quote in the past. Not the repeat picture quote, but definitely the one time picture quote. Send me my sack! I'll make it look hott, LOL!

This is what I was going to write.  I am irrationally annoyed by "how long" (ha!) it takes me to open the post, only to realize I have no idea how to answer their question.  Non-specific subjects are absolutely my #1 complaint.

  • I always come back to say thank you but sometimes it is a day later and the OP is pretty far down in the postings and others may not have noticed my post of gratitude!
  • I remember one time somebody asked about a maxi dress and I suggested an antrho maxi that I loved (it was in the lounge section). She was all "ummmm, that's a nightgown. No thanks". Totally rude about it.

Then a week later she bought it and posted pictures of herself wearing it asking how to style it. lol. Um... you're welcome!

  • My #1 pet peeve is definitely the overuse of the quote function. I can handle almost anything else, but that puts me over the edge.

I also usually hate when a post (this happens on other boards a lot more often than it does here) turns into a snark-fest. IRL, I am pretty snarky, but some of the people here on TN are BRUTAL. My snark is usually of the funny type (and often pretty self-deprecating...I crack myself up), but the meanness on here (again, not so much on this particular board) really turns me off (except for the days when I am in a bad mood, in which case instead it entertains me a little bit).
