Any other oil painters out there?

I started oil painting 11 weeks ago- found a great class at my local arts center.

Just wondering how long it took for other people to feel confident enough in their work to enter a show? My teacher asked me about entering one next week but I said I didn't feel ready to "show off" my pieces.

Also, where do you find inspiration for your projects? I have done several different paintings already but sometimes feel like I don't know "what" to paint.

Looking forward to chatting :)

Re: Any other oil painters out there?

  • Cool- I haven't touched oils since high school (and ART SCHOOL! dreams portfolio building days- LOL), but, they are fun. Enjoy yourself! Hunting down inspiration haunts any artist at some point- but, you'll find it if you stay open to it.
  • I dispised oils lol. I haven't touched them (and trashed all my stuff) since the semester I took that class in college.

Now, if I used my experience from watercolors, which I LOVED (I thought it was much more flexible as a medium -- and I love flexibility lol), it took me a bit. I entered some charcoal and pastel drawings into an art show about a year after I started art classes. BUT, I was finally comfortable with it. Figure out when you are comfortable and then go from there.

My art teacher was a bit of a fruit loop and he refused to let us paint/draw sunsets because "we could never recreate what God made" (which, hell, might be true) but it was discouraging. I still have dreams of doing that. I find inspiration in drives around where I live/lived. I did some drawings of a stream I found near where I went to college. And a graffiti covered bridge.

  • I am a strictly Acrylic painter. But I think, If you like painting and your good at. You should totally go after it and display your work proudly, some people will love it, and some will hate it, but if people are asking you to enter a show, its a good sign to your ability! Good luck to you!! Smile

  • I haven't painted in a few months since my oil painting class at college.  My absolute favorite thing though is to paint scenery.  I grew up right on the shore of Lake Superior so it's super great to be able to get inspiration just by driving a couple miles away from my parents' home when DH and I visit :] :]

I can't wait to get a bigger house so I can have my own little room and be able to start doing it again :]

    PIP!!

I tried to paste some pics in but they didn't show up in the post...not sure I want to like from Facebook because I don't know if that would let people here be able to see my page (which is private because of the nature of my job)

Any advice on how to post the pics?
