Smoking at a playground

Is it me or is this completely asinine?  Do you really have to stand right next to my child and smoke and then *yuck* put your freaking butt out in the mulch?

Yes, outdoors and etc but seriously.  It makes me want to smack the person.

Parents in general at the playground lately are just pissing me off.

Go babies Caden!

Re: Smoking at a playground

  • Playgrounds where I live are smoke-free, that would piss me off too.

  • In Italy, we saw lots of people smoking and hanging with their kids and pushing strollers.  In fact, apparently it's common for Italians to smoke during dinner; they'd get up in the middle of the course - not between courses, but in the middle - and head outside to smoke. One lady wrapped up her infant and take him outside with her.  Weird.

  • No.  Just no.

And that's coming from a former pack/day smoker with a 20 year habit.

  • It's gross.

  • did you say something? I don't think I'd be able to keep my mouth shut in that situation.

although, when my MIL smoked in my house in the middle of the night when she was staying with us after Zack was born and she thought no one would notice, I chickened out and didn't say anything to her :-(

  • I think any venue that caters to children should be smoke-free. Right outside of the playground gate? Douchey, but just fine. Inside? Hell no.
    I am serious...and don't call me Shirley.
  • If I were at a playground and had to smoke, I'd find an area away from the kids and preferably down wind.  If a ball were kicked near me I wouldn't go running away to keep the smoke away from them, though.

    I think she's just an inconsiderate person/smoker.

  • This happens at a playground near my house all the time.  Luckily it's far enough away from the infant swings that it doesn't impact my son but I'd have to say something if it were near where he was playing.  I think it's a complete d*ck move to smoke at a playground.

  • Yeah, no. That is just rude. I even feel guilty smoking on bar patios if there are children around. I'm not even as paranoid about this as I used to be, I used to try to hide the cig or quickly put it out if a family walked past me on the sidewalk.
  • smoking = a selfish habit... so why would you expect some ahole not to do it at a playground? :)

one of the things I was THRILLEd about at Disney earlier this month was that they segregate the smokers into some hidden area that I never saw.... so i never had to smell smoke, see butts, etc.  LOVED it.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I'm a dirty smoker (in the process of weaning off of them), and I've always been SUPER aware of who is around while I'm smoking. If there are children anywhere within 50 feet of me I won't light up. Hell, I make sure I'm a good distance away from anyone if I'm smoking outside somewhere public.

My husband and I went to an amusement park this summer and they had a little smoking section. There were parents who had wheeled their freaking strollers and drug their toddlers in there with them. Seriously? If you're going to smoke, don't punish your kid (or anyone else, for that matter) for it.

OMG.  Yeah, that is way worse!!!

  • I smoke, but I would never do that.

Putting her butt in the mulch - what if some kid eats it?  What a stupidbitch.

People put their butts in the giant flower pots outside of the front of our office, it makes me insane - there are two Smoker's Poles within 20 feet!!!

I try really hard to just not smoke when there are children present. When I was out with my cousins and their kids on Easter weekend I actually went around the corner and pretended I had to make a phone call (we were all waiting outside of a restaurant for a table) so the kids wouldn't know I was going to smoke.

I heard the other day that smoking rates are going way down with kids not picking up the habit, and it made me happy.

Um, that is where we went to smoke pot when I was a teen...but usually after dark when the little kids were gone.  It happened at our park not to far from our house recently when I was walking the dog in the dark.  I actually said something like, "Hmmm, you guys smell like you're up to something." when I walked by and they scattered quickly.

I'm sort of an a$$ about cig. smoking and it's rubbed off on my oldest - I only road rage when I see someone throw a cig. butt out of the window.  If he sees/smells a smoker at the park he often loudly says, "EWWWW someone is smoking!"  That's one rude thing I haven't corrected him about.

Are you united with the CCOKCs?

  • Were you in Spokane on Tuesday too?  We went to this park and it was a toddler only park (everything was built just for that size).  It was posted no smoking allowed, but a nice group of teenagers were there smoking away all cool hanging around this big rock.  Pissed me off.  Super Angry

This is one part of Italy that I will not miss when we move back to the States.  Two years of living here, and I think my lungs are probably as black as a chain smoker's.  Everybody and their grandmother smokes here.  This country is a veritable chimney.  And they don't care that they do it around your kids, or their kids, or anybody's kids.  I will be so happy when I move away from Mt. Etna and her constant ash cloud and all of the cigarette smokers here - my children, my husband and I will be able to breathe fresh air for the first time in a long time.
