Losing too fast - advice please

I've been overweight for almost my entire life, so this is a strange post for me, but an honest concern.

I am under a ton of stress right now.  I'm changing jobs, putting my house up for sale and buying a new one and moving to a new city.  Although not physically demanding, my work is very challenging and I'm exhausted at the end of the day only to go home and work on the house (removing wallpaper, painting, cleaning, moving boxes etc) until 11 or later each night.

I haven't worked out in almost 2 weeks because I've been so busy.  For the most part, I'm eating normally with the exception of Saturday - monday, when I ate within my caloric ranges (or over) but only ate breakfast and dinner and ate way more carbs than I usually do.

My issue is that I've lost 9 pounds since last week, and 6 the week before.  My weight loss had plateaued for a while before the 6 pounds, so I cleaned up my diet even further with the help of a registered dietician -  so I know a lot of it was due to come off.

In total, I've lost 21 pounds in 9.5 weeks, so am within the 2 pound a week range, but this sudden loss is what's concerning me.

I'm worried about screwing up my metabolism and gaining it all back.  Am I just overreacting to a short term stressful situation? Any advice?

  • I'm not expert but I would think when you have a lot to lose, losing more than 2 pounds a weeks should be fine. Now if you only had 10 pounds to lose and you lost it in two weeks, that would be really hard and one would have to restrict quite a bit of calories.

That 9 pound weight loss could also be water weight.

Start weighing every day and I bet you'll notice quite a bit of fluctuation. My  weight can fluctuate plus or minus 5 pounds in a day.

  • You're clearly stressed and your body is reacting. Do the best you can to eat enough food during the day, drink water and let things settle out. How overweight are you right now, because if you're really overweight, this may keep happening for a few weeks. If you keep losing more than 5+ lbs a week for another few weeks, see a doctor. But right this second, I would not be too worried.
  • If your eating had been crappy prior to the last couple of weeks, a lot of that loss is water.  I wouldn't worry about it too much.

At least when you're stressed you lose weight.  I gain when stressed.

No, my eating has been good since mid february - I stick to my caloric intake, and eat about 90% clean.  I really cleaned it up about april 1 - eating same calorie intake, clean foods, but less carbs and more protein.

  • How often do you weigh yourself? It it's only once a week, then 9 pounds in a week is more reasonable, in that you could have weighed in heavy the week before (due to water weight). I think I'd only worry if it continued for another week or two at a high rate of loss. Even though you're not working out, if you're spending several hours every day doing work on your house (painting, cleaning, etc) you're burning a chunk of calories doing that. It could be 200-500 calories or even more depending on what exactly you're doing and for how long. Have you eaten back any extra calories to account for this non-standard workout? If you don't feel like you're starving and you have enough energy, you're probably doing fine.
  • All the house stuff might be burning some serious calories.  I remember when I started rehabbing my house-it was exhausting physical work!  Do you feel hungrier?  A couple of weeks of dramatic loss is ok if you're starting a weight loss program (or really changing things up with activity), more than that isn't ok.  I'd see how you do in the next week and if it doesn't level off try eating a bit more.  If it's still wonky see a doctor.  I really do think it's probably all the extra work on your house though.  Another idea-I go in spurts and PMS or too much processed food can make me level off or gain, then BOOM, I drop a bunch all at once the next week or so.  Last year I had an extra awful week of PMS-the next week I lost 7 pounds.
