We got M's first round of allergy testing back.
He is negative for all the major allergens we tested (dairy, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, dust mites, citrus fruits and wheat) but is allergic to our dog. We anticipated this, as he gets hives from her kisses.
So, we are banning her from his room. We will continue to keep her from kissing him (as much as one is able). We'll work on getting her off the furniture.
I think his allergy is mild - if he gets hives, they disappear once we wipe him down.
We're hopeful that these changes will keep him comfortable, which is really all we can do at this point. I hate the thought of him being allergic to dogs for life, so I hope he outgrows it, poor guy! We are such dog people.

Re: DS is allergic to our dog.
This is always my suggestion, accupuncture. I took dd for food allergies and just took her again yesterday actually for a peanut allergy. They don't actually use needles with the kids, they use accupressure and reflexology.
Sorry, meant to add that my nephew was treated for seasonal allergies, grass, etc, so it's not just food.
Jaylea - I was allergic to dogs and cats when little. Now it's just cats and dog slobber.
I had to train my dog not to lick my face b/c I still broke out in hives from that. otherwise - we got along perfectly fine.
Hope your son's story is similar
There is hope! I'm allergic to dogs, but we always had a dog growing up and we have one now. It doesn't bother me often, and keeping her out of his room and off the furniture shoud help a lot.
My brother has the same reaction to slobber, but has two dogs - they don't get to him like cats. I was saying to H last night that I only see it as an issue if he is like me with cats (i.e. a complete mess) or is asthmatic and it excacerbates his asthma (no diagnosis on this front so far, though he does wheeze and get croup and RSV, and has eczema and allergies). Otherwise, I think it's manageable as it is right now.
J has a cat allergy to the same degree you have described. We have never had him tested as our cat won't let him even touch him lol, but we have noticed the rash if he pets other cats. I think it is pretty easy to manage and it seems you have a good plan.
As he gets older it will be easier for him to realize he needs to wash his hands or face if he comes into contact with the dog. J knows if he pets a cat to just go to the bathroom and wash his hands and he is usually not compliant about cleaning himself lol. But he knows he will get really itchy if he doesn't.
Oh no, poor little guy!
This is my fear with Kathryn.
Sorry to hear about your DS's allergy. I get hives from dog saliva, and my skin starts to itch if I pet a dog and then don't wash my hands immediately. Hopefully as he gets older he won't react as much, especially if it's a dog he lives with.
When I was 15, we found out I was allergic to cats. We had a cat. She asked the doc what she could do. The doc told her to get rid of the cat.
My mom's response? "We're getting rid of her before we get rid of the cat!"
Thanks Mom.
Oh, and I now have 2 cats and are not allergic to them. I think I adjusted or something.
Hopefully the same thing happens with your DS.
I'm glad you got it figured out...hopefully the changes will do the trick. If it's mainly the saliva that's definitely workable.
Are there still tests outstanding? Do they think it's just the dog, or is there potentially more to his allergies than that?
This was just the blood testing, for what his pedi thought were the most likely culprits. We're going to see an allergist too, who will do further testing. So there may be more.
