Luzern?

DH and I live in Switzerland and my best friend's parents from the US are visiting Luzern this weekend and we are meeting them for the day on Saturday. I've only been once, to the Transport Museum and I'm not sure what else there is to do there.

Anyone have ideas and restaurant recs?

Thanks!

Re: Luzern?

  • A boat cruise of the lake would probably be a nice way to spend the afternoon because it's gorgeous.  H and I had grand plans to go back and do that one weekend but never made it again before we moved.

The lion monument's interesting.  That's all I've got.

  • We are going next week!  We plan on mainly walking around town, checking out the lion monument, and the old bridges.  Our dinner plans are the Fondue House which I have heard awesome things about.

  • Omg, we went to a restaurant called The Fondue House in Lucerne and it was a horrible experience.  I would definitely not recommend it, if it's the same one.  I think we spent over $50 just for the dessrt and the chocolate wasn't even warm or in a fondue pot with a flame.  It was just a melted toblerone bar with a few pieces of fruit on the outside of the bowl.  Here is a link to my trip advisor review:

I was soo upset because we waited until our last night in switzerland to have chocolate fondue and I was expecting it to be amazing.  Even the cheap candy bars I bought at the grocery store there were incredible.  But that restaurant was a disaster.  I'm really not a picky person and all our other meals in Switzerland were pricey but good, or at least fine.  I just don't want anyone else to waste their money on this place.

Good to know. I'll have to research some other options

Thanks for the advice everyone, we'll go on the boat if the weather is good.

I just wanted to make a comment about this restaurant, chocolate fondue is not something Suisse and normally they have no idea how to make it. My Suisse husband had chocolate fondue the first time in Argentina. So I'm not really suprised that the chocolate fondue wasn't good. How was the cheese fondue though?

This.  I'm actually surprised that they had it on the menu.  I don't think I've ever seen it on one and we had fondue and raclettte quite a bit when we lived there.

Ah the lion monument I never found. lmao. My mom and I had a train transfer in Luzern when we went to Titlis. So we checked out the city for a tiny bit. Went looking for that damn monument and then out of nowhere down poured rain. haha. Never found it and never got DH to go with my to Luzern again before we moved.

The city is pretty. I hope you have a nice time.

  • Hm interesting.  I guess I hadn't done my research before that trip.  I just assumed since Swiss chocolate is delicious and fondue is big there, I expected it to be good.  But good to know.  I didn't have cheese fondue at this restaurant.  I had it the day before at a restaurant by the river and I don't remember which it was.  It was good there, expensive, but tasty.  Still, everything about that Fondue House was awful when we were there.  The fruit they gave with the fondue was all brown and not fresh.  And the fruit we had everywhere else in Switzerland (and Europe for that matter) was delicious.  And the staff was just really mean in general.  Even if chocolate fondue is not a specialty there, I suspect there are better places to have it than the Fondue House.  I'm really not the type of person who is hard to please and difficult at restaurants, but I still stand by my negative review of this restaurant.  Obviously, I can't comment on their cheese fondue since I didn't eat it there.
