On getting the keys...

We got the keys to our home today.

When I pulled up, the owner was there just locking things up. He unlocked the door and took me and DD through the house, explaining things he left for us. The washer and dryer, the lawn mower... a bunch of extra tile for the bathroom if we ever need it, potting soil for the planters out front. He was so incredibly kind.

I told him how much we loved the house and how it was so perfect for us, and I think he was really touched by that. I think he was really attached to the home (it was a short sale) and I think it made him feel better that a family was going to move into it and live there for a very long time.

Now we're back at the apartment, moving day is Friday... it feels so weird knowing we own a home across town right now. I am more nervous right now than when we brought DD home from the hospital as a newborn! I just can't believe we finally did it!

Re: On getting the keys...

  • Congrats!  It's really nice that your seller was so kind.  Ours was the same way, she was there when we did the final walkthrough and told us about all the things she left (which was incredibly nice of her!).  I think it made her feel better that we loved the home so much.
  • I had heard so many horror stories about sellers kicking in doors and stealing things prior to moving out especially in short sale/foreclosure situations. We were really lucky to have such a nice seller (and it sounds like you were too!) It was just a lot more peaceful of a situation to come into.

  • I long for a day like that of my own. Good luck in your new home.

  • I have to say how lucky I was to find this board!! I have been on The Bump for years, but this board was new to me and I was so glad to have found it. You ladies have been amazing answering questions, and have eased my mind and also made me think of things I hadn't yet thought of.

  • Congrats! I'm so glad you had a good closing experience! Good luck with the move!
  • I have been following your stuff on here.  Congrats on getting your keys!!!!  This forum is great.  It has been really helpful.
  • Wow, you sure got lucky.

We didn't have the greatest experience with the sellers. They were unhelpful, they hid all of the manuals (WHY??), they left junk all over the yard, and they said they'd be back sometime during the week to show us around and show us how everything works. Of course they never did. The house was a huge mess and we're still cleaning even though we closed over a month ago.

It must feel good that the sellers were nice!! We are a bit afraid of our sellers and we immediately changed the locks 30 minutes after closing. I never want to see them again.

  • That's wonderful! I'm sure it made the seller happy to know his home would be taken care of. It's a good testament to the fact that individuals in the short sale or foreclosure situations are truly good people who may have just fallen on hard times or a bad situations.

    Congrats on the new home!

  • That is so nice of the seller!!! I'm sure you will give the home lots of love. Congrats on the keys!!!!
