Costa Rica - which airport?
Trying to plan a trip to CR in June and just doing one step at a time. This morning I booked my flight into San Jose. I'm not sure what part of the country we want to visit, but I thought that was my only option. Now someone at work said I should fly into Liberia and that all of what I want to do is in the northern part of the country. I can still change my flight with Delta with no penalty... we are looking for mostly beaches, rafting and ziplining. Suggestions on which airport would be better?
Thanks!
Re: Costa Rica - which airport?
You really need to pick your hotel before your flight. It's the only way to know which airport you should fly into.
We flew into Liberia because it was closer to our hotel, but there are plenty of places (also with beaches, rafting, and ziplining) that are closer to San Jose.
Is there an area that has what I am looking for near the San Jose airport that I should look at for a hotel? I'd rather not change my flight and find somewhere that has what we are looking for near SJ.
I think you need to take a step back in your planning, and do some more research.
This is like booking a ticket into San Francisco, California for a beach vacation and moving forward from there. There are hundreds of miles of beaches, and a variety of places to stay. Not to mention, there are no hot, sunny beaches in SF, so you'd need to either have a crappy beach stay, or add on significant travel time.
Costa Rica is the same. It is a large country, with very rough roads, that makes for long travel times. San Jose is located almost in the middle of the county (between coasts), so you could go to the west coast or east coast. Both are very different. You'll also need to account for travel time and arragements to and and from your hotel. Are you renting a car?
I'm not sure where you're coming from, but it was over 15 hours of travel for us to get to CR. After all that travel, there is no way I would want to land at a hotel or city just because it's closer to the San Jose airport. I spent plenty of time looking around, found the best resort for us, and then booked out from there.
We flew into Liberia and stayed in Guanacaste. We visited various towns in the northwest region, so I can only personally recommend places in that area.
There are some really amazing places in Costa Rica, but you'd be better off researching those first, and then changing your flights if you need to. I wouldn't limit your hotel choices just to those around the airport.
Last February my friend and I flew into and out of San Jose. We spent four days in Nosara which is located on the Nicoya Peninsula and spent the other four days in La Fortuna/Arenal. The beaches in Nosara were very beautiful and there were several to choose from. It did take 4-5 hours to drive to Nosara from San Jose. You can visit my blog entry on Nosara here and on La Fortuna/Arenal here.
A lot of people whom fly into San Jose choose to split their time between La Fortuna and the beaches of Manuel Antonio, which are a little closer than those in Nosara.
Definitely do a little bit more research and take a look at photos of the potential areas you are interested in. I would also recommend visiting your local library and check out a few books on Costa Rica to help narrow your decision.
um. do some research. the entire country has awesome stuff to do-not only the north. i flew into san jose and then stayed on the west coast. since san jose is centrally located you can do either east or west-and they all have tons of stuff to do. and all that you list are easily done in the rest of the country as well. makes me wonder if your coworker knows what she's talking about.....
good luck.
I thought San Jose was a great starting and ending point when I went to Costa Rica. Ground travel is definitely slow, but there are lots of flights within the country that will get you around. I landed in San Jose and spent one night/day there, then took a flight to La Fortuna (about 15 or 20 minutes). Another short flight from there to Manuel Antonio and then another one back to San Jose to fly home.
I will say that I was terrified the entire time I was on the tiny planes, but it was pretty efficient transport. Fly early in the day for a smoother ride!
I flew both NatureAir (www.natureair.com) and Sansa (www.flysansa.com) and survived on both.
