Was this bad planning?

I'm having 2 wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow.  And my marathon is in a week and a half on the 6th.  I planned on doing 12 miles on Saturday and then short runs during next week.  Will I be totally out of it in pain from my mouth?  The dentist said I would be fine to go into work on Friday so I figured it would only be painful that day.  But I just mentioned it to my running buddy and she thinks I'm crazy!

Re: Was this bad planning?

  • I would think you'll be fine, but I had hardly any issues when I got my wisdom teeth out.  I was sore for like a day or two, but other than that I was fine.

However, I know other people who puffed up like a chipmunk and were in a ton of pain.  It's totally individual, so you really won't know how you'll react until you go through it, unfortunately.

  • I had mine out back in HS, but after 2 days I think I was back to normal.  However, my H had his out a year and half ago and planned on taking two days off work-he had his out on a Weds, took off work Thurs/Fri, and was going to go back to work on Saturday.  He ended up needing to call off Saturday too due to swelling and pain (he's a bartender, so he kind of needed to be able to talk), and wasn't really fully functional until that Monday.  So really, everyone reacts differently...its hard to say what's going to happen until it actually happens.  Good luck!
  • I was fine after mine but I don't know if I was run 12 miles fine.  If all goes well, I'm sure you can run Saturday just maybe not the entire length.

The real issue is if you get dry socket.  That can be so painful!

  • I could push back the long run if I needed to.  I'm glad not everyone had horrific experiences!  I already pushed back the surgery because of work so I really want to get it over with.  Guess I'll just wait and see!

  • I was in camp excruciation post-extraction. It sucked. I dry socketed on both sides. Yay.

Use the heck out of your mouthwash and make sure to take any antibotics that they give you.

  • it'll probably be fine.
  • Do you know if your teeth are impacted?

I had 1 (impacted) removed ~10 years ago and it was no joke. I was out of comission for a couple days, got puffy and a black eye.

I would push the surgery back-You trained so hard and long for this race. BTW..I'll be there too! Hoping for good weather!

This was me about 7 years ago.  I was out for almost a week and even after, I felt pain in my jaw whenever I did a high impact workout, including running.  Pain killers were my friend but I also had some nausea from them.

You might be OK, but you never know.

  • I hate to be a downer, but you might call your oral surgeon & see how long you are supposed to wait to do vigorous exercise.

I just had a consultation to have mine pulled (I go in for all 4 on May 4), and mine told me I couldn't work out for 5-7 days because of the risk of dry-sockets.

This may be different for you, but I would just check. I hope you're good to go, or can easily reschedule.

  • I was out of work for a week with a dry socket, an infection, and lots of pain. I'd say I was an exception to the rule. You will probably be fine, BUT if you don't feel up to a 12 mile run, you won't ruin your marathon.
  • I just called the surgeon because I was getting nervous and he very nonchalantly said I will be absolutely fine to run 12 miles on Saturday.  Like as if I was crazy for asking! I'm glad I called at least and I hope he's right.

I know! The past few weekends when it's been warm has totally been screwing with my pace.  Last I checked it said it will be cool but I'm sure the forecast has changed a hundred times since then.

  • Another one in the dry socket camp. Be careful and do everything possible to avoid a sry socket and you should be fine within a few days. Disclaimer: I have never run a marathon so I'm not sure how that may or may not impact your ability to run a marathon.
  • My friend had hers out in HS and her dad (ER doc) insisted that the oral surgeon give her 5 days of low dose prednisone.  Not sure how that would make you feel though.  I just remember the awful pain & inflamation when I had mine but my doc just told me to take advil.  It sucked but i think most people have an easier time of it.
