Update on Rocksie

If we make it through this summer, it will be a miracle.

She got her bandage off on Friday.  The vet put a cone on her and within half a second she smashed her face into the floor, put both paws inside of it, ripped her head up, and tore the cone in half. She also bit through an inflatable neck brace.

Fortunately, she hasn't been fussing with the stitches except for when we clean it with peroxide, then she wants to lick a little. But unfortunately, I'm afraid to crate her because I think when she gets bored, she'll start to chew the stitches.  Also, the vet said we're not to put anything in the crate with her (Kong, puzzle ball, etc.) because she could slip on it.

We started her on the sedative when she started to feel a little better, but then it just made her SO tired that she wouldnt even move her tail or front legs, and would barely open her eyes.  We cut it down and I do think that its helping her to be calmer, but she definitely doesnt like laying around all day.

We also have to practically sit next to her all day because if she hears a noise, she tries to jump up to investigate. Shes like, "How can I possibly protect the neighborhood if you won't let me look out the window!"

Its just been tough because she has the dog instinct to want to play and move around. I know its only going to get worse over the next 14 weeks and 4.5 days as she continues to feel better and better.

Overall though, she is fine and I know in the long run she will be back to 100% in the meantime.  Right now its my sleep and sanity (and my parents) thats in jeopardy.

  • lol, I laugh only because I feel your pain!  I know both of ours would be the same way.  poor Rocksie.

I have no advice, but I'm glad she will be back to 100%.

Is she abel to go to work with one of you guys?  Or have someone stay with her?  And maybe lots of new Kongs and Nylabones?

  • My dad's work week is Wednesday to Sunday, so he has been watching her on Monday and Tuesday.  So she really is only alone Wed, Thurs, and Fri.

I was going to work from home this week those three days but my dad has 71 vacation days that he has to use by July 1, so he said he'd just watch her for me.

After Tuesday when she gets her stitches out, we're just going to have to crate her those three days of the week. I was hoping to pile her up with kongs and turn on the tv, but she's just going to have to deal with the tv.

I was going to have my Nana watch her but she has hardwood and Rocksie is only allowed carpet, and she lives at the bottom of a hill and Rocksie isn't allowed to do hills for 10 weeks.

We don't think we'll crate her at night because we put the couch cushions and the bed mattress on the floor and she has been content with sleeping in those places and not roaming around.

I think its just going to be a day at a time from here on out, every day she gets a little smarter/braver about stuff.

  • She's also not allowed to do anything but go out to the bathroom right now. We have 2.5 more weeks until she's allowed to walk on a 3 foot leash and at that point it will be 5 minutes twice a day on a flat surface.

Then two weeks after that we can introduce like figure 8's to get her to do turns and stuff. Then two weeks after that we can do steps. I think limiting her to all that stuff is going to be hard too because once she gets a taste of it, I think she's going to try and push it.

  • Poor puppers :(  I have no advice either but I'll be thinking about you guys and hoping for a speedy recovery for Rocksie!
  • Hope Rocksie will get through this and be her doggie self in no time!

  • Poor Rocksie :-( I can't imagine having to prevent a dog from acting like a dog for so long. We had to keep Bandit from running for a month bc of his heart worms and that was so hard. I can't imagine how hard this will be for you guys.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...
