Latest article from The Art of Making a Baby
got this on my FB this morning...
http://blogs.prevention.com/inspired-bites/2012/04/25/top-10-chemicals-most-likely-to-cause-autism-and-learning-disabilities/
LOVE this comment below-
How about we quit injecting our kids with aluminum, formaldehyde and the rest of the toxic stew that they call vaccines
Toxic stew, huh?
It states that autism is up 78% since 2002. Is it on the rise or just being diagnosed more? I'm sure there's some truth to some of these studies but all many people conclude reading it is that vaccines are the devil. DH's family is all fundie homeschoolers and they refuse to vaccinate because they are afraid of autism.
Re: Latest article from The Art of Making a Baby
My dad said when he was young kids were just called "weird" who probably showed some signs of autism. I think it's being diagnosed more and more.
Autism rates are increasing, even when you control for more diagnosis, "just the weird kid" factors.
I don't believe it's caused by vaccines, but I don't know what's causing it. I do think the internet has led more of the "weird kids" to find each other and reproduce.
That chick is an idiot, though. Regardless of this issue.
ETA: oops - the "art of making a baby" person that I know of isn't the same person.

I think the rates of diagnosis are on the rise now because we know more about the spectrum of autism on the whole, and are able to pinpoint kids who may need extra attention and/or therapy.
And again, I'd like to reiterate, even if there was an iota of truth to the vaccines and autism thing, I'd rather have an autistic child than one that died from whooping cough. Call me crazy.
I don't doubt that there are environmental factors at work in this and other things we're seeing increasing numbers of (for instance, tongue tie and other "midline defects" seem to be occurring more and more). We eat a very different diet than we did even a generation ago. The water and air are a mess.
Part of my frustration with the "ZOMG! Vaccines cause autism!!!11!" is that it masks the possibility of real environmental contaminants that MAY well be the cause, and it will take us longer to figure out what, where, and why because so many people are putting so much energy into something proven to NOT be harmful.
I am the 99%.
Not sure it has any basis in fact or truth, but best quote ever about Match_dot_com/online dating!!!
Are you united with the CCOKCs?

(taken by memory)
There was just a piece on NPR about this, that some is due to increased dx, but that there's definitely some increase that is not accounted for. I could swear it was Talk of the Nation on March 30, but I can't find it.
I agree that I think the anti-vax crowd is actually doing autism a disservice by talking attention away from finding the real cause of the increase.
Also, that internet dating hypothesis is not that far fetched. There's a theory that the reason the rate is so high in my beloved Silicon Valley is because enginerds with undx Asperger's are breeding.
I can't believe we're talking about this relatively uncontroversial article and not about her post about vaccination (spoiler alert: she doesn't believe in injecting her baby with aluminum and formaldehyde!)
Oh and as a bonus, there's a shot of her being sexy in the pediatrician's office.
Thank you! I'm not sure why everyone is hating on this article that doesn't seem that bad while ignoring her verbal BJ of Dr. "Ima quack" Sears!!
I always think the same thing whenever these debates come up. With autism and other diseases, we're always trying to blame some singular element when the factors influencing the development of these diseases are likely many and everyone's tolerance for these environmental insults is going to be different.
Further, exposure to toxins is just one slice of the pie. Look what's gone on with our diets. I think someone ought to be looking at our shift away from animal-based and saturated fats and cholesterol (extremely important to brain development/health) and towards plant based oils with are supposedly "healthier." We're lacking in fat soluble vitamins. Other micronutrients have been diminishing in our diets because of shiitty farming methods and our modern food choices. How about our sleep? Stress levels? Activity levels? Do we go out in the sun? Play in real dirt? And so on.

These are the HSRA statistics for folks who have been compensated for injury or death to a child due to vaccination.
Also, check out the VAERS database and read the entries of folks who have reported adverse reactions.
http://vaers.hhs.gov/data/index
Vaccinations do have risks.
Sigh. No one said they didn't have risks. However, of all those cases only ONE autism related case was compensated AND it wasn't even clearly autism. Plus, seriously this is the standard: "To win an award, a claimant must show a causal connection; if medical records show a child has one of several listed adverse effects soon after vaccination, the assumption is that it was caused by the vaccine" Not that hard to meet.
I'm picking up what you're putting down.
I am the 99%.
Gaaaah!
There are legitimate reasons to be concerned about vaccines! It has been scientifically shown in multiple studies that autism because of thimerasol is not one of them! I wish people would stop listening to everything b-list celebs like Jenny McCarthy say and making people with legitimate concerns look as crazy as her.
I mainly lurk on here
but this little thread made me smile. I made a comment on the ride home today about how I wanted to go "rub up on some anti-vax freak" because I had to get all my travel vaccines/boosters today. I'm all full of:
-typhoid
-Hep A and B
-tetanus
-pertussis
-MMR
-polio
I feel like a freaking human pin cushion and I'm not even done yet!
So am I going to wake up dead tomorrow or will all the lethal chemicals floating around in my bloodstream wreck havoc with my brain???
