Comparing Calorie Estimates from Several Popular Sites

Hi ladies,

I decided to conduct an experiment today, and see what kind of results I would get from different diet/fitness/health websites as far as my target caloric intake per day. Each site asked for the exact same information: My age (28), Height (5'5"), Gender (F), and Activity Level (Light to Moderate). Some sights had only 4 options for activity level, some had as many as 6, but they all generally ranged from "Sedentary" to "Badass." I wasn't sure exactly which one to pick all the time, so I calculated for both light and moderate activity at each site. Here are the results!

Livestrong: 2038 (light) 2298 (moderate)

FatSecred: 2100 (lght) 2400 (moderate)

FreeDieting: 1786 light) 1900 (moderate)*

May Clinic: 1800 (light) 2000 (moderate)

WebMD: 1786 (light) 2014 (moderate)

MyFitnessPal: 1750 (light) 1880 (moderate

*FreeDieting.com also told me to aim for 1072 if I wanted "extreme fat loss," which makes me distrust their judgement.

Anyway, just thought I'd share in case anyone else is interested!

EDIT - Forgot to mention, I entered "maintain current weight" as my goal for each of these sites.

Re: Comparing Calorie Estimates from Several Popular Sites

  • I've always thought myfitnesspal was way low
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • It's funny that MFP is on the lower side for base calories, because I've always noticed that their calories burned during exercise are usually too high.
