Panorama: Poor in America 2/2012
If you have 20 mins, take a look at this. People waiting 4 hours to see visiting doctors from the U.K. (who initially were volunteering in the Amazon but saw, hey America needs help, too!), hungry kids, people living in tent cities.... and noticeably most of the people profiled are White, used to be middle-class types.
I honestly don't disagree with the idea of balancing the budget and curbing spending, but seriously, if you are going to cut all these programs for those people suffering the most, what are you going to put in it's place in the meantime while we wait for the job creators to hire them back. Just let them die and go hungry?
Re: BBC/Panorama: Poor in America
I think that your last paragraph is exactly what the Gov. of MI intends.
When asked if tent cities are acceptable, he response is that the people living in them need to be trained for job?? Has he even polled the population to see if they are skilled? I'm willing to get there is great talent in the tent city population.
But sure, sounds like many want people to die while they wait for trickle down economics to work.
I do wonder about the man w/ the hernia though. Hospitals give Free Care based on income. They said that insurance would cost $5,000/year for the two of them and that is what he makes working. I am sure that an income of $5,000 qualifies you for Free Care.
Seriously, this is appalling. I wish everyone would watch at least the first two minutes of it.
The Heritage Foundation guy trying to tell her "no, actually people aren't really poor, if they say they don't have food, they must be mistaken because they really do" just kills me. It's so indicative of so many people on the right who simply don't believe - or refuse to believe - that poverty is a real problem in this country.
I wanted to punch that guy. He also brought up another topic that has been discussed on here before: OMGaaah the poor have HDTVs they aren't really poor!!
