Need pattern help

I just bought this yarn:

It's called You Are My Sunshine from Three Irish Girls, and it's near and dear to my heart. Some of the proceeds go to an organization that supports families who have lost babies. As someone who had 3 early losses and had friends with late-term and newborn losses, I just knew I had to get some. Plus, just look at it. It's like a pansy rolled into a skein of yarn.

So I have 3 skeins of DK merino, at 270 yd/skein. Many people have suggested using this pattern:

Thing is, this calls for worsted weight, and mine is DK, so I don't know how that will throw off the yardage. Plus it calls for a contrasting color and I don't have that either.

I was looking at this pattern, which I fell in love with years ago:

It calls for fingering, but I have more than enough in DK if it gets a little out of control.

So, which would you choose? Or would you go with another pattern altogether? I feel like I've spent the last 2 days constantly trolling ravelry for inspiration.

Re: Need pattern help

  • Of those two patterns, I like the second option a lot more.  Are you set on a shawl?  I tried seeing what other people have made with that yarn but it's not in the Ravelry library as of yet.

    It is beautiful yarn!

ETA - After I replied I remembered this pattern that one of my knitting students made and I love, which calls for DK.  With the additional yardage you could make a hat to match (and maybe some mittens/gloves) and save it for next winter?

  • Whatever you go with, it will be beautiful. You do great work and that is just beautiful yarn.

  • I agree with PP, I like the second pattern a lot more than the first.

  • I guess I'll be the lone dissenter in saying I like the first one more. Honestly, though, I don't love either pattern. I know how frustrating it can be though to find a pattern you love that works with the yarn you have!

Yeah, it's a little frustrating, but the yarn isn't going anywhere, so I can take my time. Thanks for the feedback everyone! If you run across a pattern you love, please pass it along!

  • Now I'm annoyed because I have a shawl book (if I go that route) somewhere in this house and I cannot find it for the life of me...
