Have you ever gone to...

see the Price is Right?

Yeah. I'm a total nerd, but DS and I love this show. So, has anybody ever gone to see it?

Re: Have you ever gone to...

  • I haven't, but a friend from college was on it.  We had a massive party the day it aired.
  • I went once in college.

Honestly, it was a big disappointment for me.

Don't get me wrong - it was fun at the time, but it's kind of like taking an underground tour at Disneyland. It's better to be naive and just enjoy the magic.

LOL. Love your response. Can you elaborate?

  • You asked for it, and don't say I didn't warn you....

(I went approximately 10 years ago, so things may have changed slightly)

It's a very long process. You spend a good portion of the day waiting in lines, and waiting to move, and waiting to go into the studio, waiting to film, etc. Bring a book, or some very talkative friends. Don't go when it's super hot, or cold, because you spend a lot of time waiting outside.

In one of those lines, the producers do a short interview with everyone. The producers then hand pick the contestants. I don't know why, but I always assumed people were picked by some sort of lottery draw. Also, if you come in a group over 20 (or so, I don't remember the exact number), you are guaranteed that someone from your group is chosen. So, if you are there on a day with a lot of groups, very few other people are chosen. If you want to get picked, try to act as entertaining as possible during your interview, whatever that means.

You need to bring your social security card. I didn't have mine with me, because I was living away from home at college, so I was immediately out of the running. I don't know how I knew that I need the SS card, but lots of people weren't aware and  didn't bring theirs either. Maybe some people didn't feel comfortable walking around Hollywood with the SS card in their pocket.

Second, the set looks likeshit. The stage is pretty small and all scenes are moved on and off by hand. They look like spray-painted styrofoam. It looks much more glamorous on TV (which says a lot, right?). In person, it looks so lame.

Bob Barker is an assholio. Not that it matters now, but he was a big fat jerk to everyone there. Wait no, he was not a jerk to the 18 year old showgirls, but he was a big creeper.

I had a friend who ended up winning some items. But you have to pay taxes on those items, usually close to 50%, and their "value" is so inflated for the show that you end up paying almost as much as they're worth in real life, for an item that you didn't get to pick out. This guy ended up declining a couple of items because they weren't worth the price.

If I were in college, going to class 2 days a week and not working, I would go again just to entertain myself for the day. I wouldn't make a special trip for it though.

Did I rain on your parade enough yet Smile

But that's just my take on it. I'm sure there are plenty of people who love the experience! I have a feeling that the show might not be around much longer, so go now, if you have the desire. However, I thought that visiting sitcom or judge show sets was much more fun.

  • I went and it was a lot of fun. We went right before Bob Barker left so we had to spend the night on the street in order to assure that we got in. You dont have to do that now. In fact we are going again over Memorial Day and if we got Priority Tickets from http://on-camera-audiences.com/shows/The_Price_is_Right# then you dont have to wait in line at all. The producers ask whats your name and what you do for a living. When you answer your questions you need to be full of energy and fun. Thats how they choose you.

I do agree that Bob Barker was a jerk and wouldnt sign autographs but I think Drew Carey might be better. It does take a while but standing in line is part of the fun. The set is small and not as glamarous as on tv but its like that on all show sets.

I am really excited to go again. If I was you then I would go. Yes you do have to pay taxes on the prizes but you can turn down any that you dont want.

If you have any questions let me know.

  • Awesome! I've always wanted to go! The closest thing I've done to the real one is a Price is Right show they did in Atlantic City and I made it on stage and won an entertainment system (the prizes were def not as big as they are in the real show)

    Have fun!
