Have you heard about the Farewell Intercourse law in Egypt?

Someone posted about this on my fb so I had to look for an article.

 http://rt.com/news/egypt-sex-dead-wife-054/

Egypt?s Islamist-dominated parliament is set to introduce a law allowing husbands to have sex with their dead wives up to six hours after death. Critics fear it highlights a trend of increasingly anti-female legislation since the Arab Spring.

The ?farewell Intercourse? bill was inspired by a Fatwa issued by a Moroccan cleric last year. Zamzami Abdul Bar said that since the two would meet in Heaven again anyway, death shouldn?t get in the way of one last post-mortem marital romp.

Critics have slammed the law as ?catastrophic.? Prominent journalist and TV host Jaber al-Qarmouty used his program on Tuesday to lash out at the proposed law.

?This is unbelievable. It is a catastrophe to give the husband such a right! Has the Islamic trend reached that far? Is there really a draft law in this regard? Are there people thinking in this manner,? he lamented on air.

Egypt?s National Council for Women (NCW) also called on Parliament not to adopt this and other measures which they believe increasingly seek to roll back women?s rights.

The NTC further charges that "marginalizing and undermining the status of women would negatively affect the country's human development.?

Along with the rather grim ?farewell Intercourse? draft law, parliament is also set to approve legislation that would allow girls as young as 14 to get married.

Lawmakers are also seeking to eliminate a reform implemented over a decade ago that allows women to end unhappy or abusive marriages without interference from their spouses.

NCW head Dr. Mervat al-Talawi sent a message to the People?s Assembly speaker outlining the plight of women in post-revolutionary Egypt.

Apart from the controversial marriage reforms, she also reportedly appealed to parliament not to legislate away a woman?s right to education and employment under the guise of religion, Al Arabiya reports.

But with the Muslim Brotherhood securing the biggest bloc in parliament and posed to take the presidency in next month?s elections, the rights women enjoyed during the Mubarak era may soon be a thing of the past.

  • If I could post emoticons I'd place th one with horrified eyes here.
  • Are we sure this isn't from the Onion?

Also, I watched the Stoning of Soraya M two weeks ago and they said a man couldn't touch the body of a muslim woman after her death. Maybe that's only an Iranian thing?

  • WTF???? there are men who even want to do this in the first place???

  • I read about it this morning.  The only sources I could find at that time were tabloid style papers, like The Daily Mail.  I'm grossed out....and skeptical, since it pretty much goes against Islamic burial rituals.

  • So I don't see this as anti woman (but I also don't see the body as anything but matter after death)....but this is just creepy. Are there really that many men who want this?!?

Good point. I can't find any legit source reporting it either,, I'm inclined to think it's bogus now.

Crazy scary story. I saw it a few months ago.

Yeah, that's where I'm at on this one too.

If this is a real law, I'd consider it anti-male, since it seeems to hold a pretty dim view of men.

  • Um, say what?
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
  • Looks like there's no evidence that this is true. And some are saying that it might be a smear campaign from Mubarak loyalists to make the current Egyptian government look bad.

  • I got an email forward about this yesterday.

Just got off an hour long call with a bunch of people in Egypt. None of whom had heard of this. I'm sure it's just tabloid nonsense since as everyone has already pointed out it violates Islamic burial practice.

    Tritto.

I like how no one cared about the actual proposed legislation that harms women - allowing 14 year old girls to marry.  It's all about the shock value for the news, huh.

ETA:  "no one cared" meaning the author of the piece.  That's what I would be drawing attention to!

Is there any evidence that this is being proposed either, though?

No.  I was more commenting on the state of affairs - if you want to smear the other party, something as tame as allowing 14 year olds to marry wouldn't do the job so you have to go to necrophilia.

This is only from wikipedia, but there are quite a few countries with high levels of child marriage.

Thank goodness. Also honestly I stopped reading when they said a Fatwa had been issued.

  • That's it. I'm emailing Snopes. It's not on there yet.

And it looks like other news agencies are picking it up. A few rungs up the credibility latter: it's on Yahoo! news

and Huffington Post but Slogblog repoprts that Christian Science Monitor reports that it's fake.
